From Giora.Mikenberg@cern.ch Mon Jan 10 12:32:15 2000 Date: Sat, 06 Nov 1999 18:40:02 +0100 From: George MIKENBERG To: atlas-muon@atlas-lb.cern.ch Subject: MUON update and Eilat Program Dear colleagues: since last August there has been no report on the MUON activities. In view of the forthcoming Eilat meeting, I would like to send an update, as well as the expected main points that will be cover in the Meeting. Finally, since most of the community is involved in the MDT project, Gregor is preparing a more detail list of achievements and open points in a specially dedicated WEB page. http://hpfrs6.physik.uni-freiburg.de/~herten/atlas/muon/mdt/report/report.html. This Web page is still in preparation. Since the last August report, the following activities have taken place: 1) The problem of leaking tubes has been isolated (due to a miss-design of the o-ring groove). Few 100's of tubes have been made with the corrected design, using both Pressure and EM crimping without leaks, the corrections have been transmitted to the firm producing the end plugs (NIEF). 2) The wire locator tender has gone out. The lowest offer comes from a firm that seems very well qualified for the job. The final decision will take place on Monday, November 8th by the MUON Finance Committee. Assuming the approval of the Israeli ILO, this order will result on a substantial savings for the MDT community, since it will be free of charge. The expected preseries will be available in January. 3) The BIS Module-0 has been timely completed in Greece, using production tools. The chamber has been scanned in the x-ray tomograph. The mechanical precision of the two multilayers is well within the specifications, while there is a misalignment between the two multilayers caused by accident during the construction. This misalignment was indeed predicted by the the RASNIKs used to align the towers. The leak tests have not been fully performed on the tubes, due to time problems, and a repetition of the leak rate test has to be performed, before one can continue with the installation of the gas distribution system and the other services. 4) The RPC Module-0 has been successfully tested in X5 and its operation has been shown for rates largely exceeding the expected ATLAS rates. There are some delays in the start of construction, however first production modules are expected before the end of the year. 5) TGC production has started, although with a 6 months delay. The expected production rate has been achieved during the last few weeks and 120 chambers have already been closed. The rejection rate of 6% should be reduced with time. The ASD-IC have been fully produced and the ASD boards are expected during next year. 6) There is a preliminary report for the installation of the Big-Wheeel MDT chambers. The report includes the design of the installation tool. A presentation will take place in Eilat, to allow for comments that should be included in the final report. 7) Another small wheel workshop took place at Brandeis, where most of the chambers and alignment issues have been cleared up; including a possible solution for the gas and cabling connections. 8) A solution for the gas distribution of the BI chambers and its impact in the installation procedure has been worked out. 9) A preliminary design of the W-shielding, to be included in the small wheel has been made, and is being discussed with possible manufacturers. This shielding will substantially reduced the (1/2) the neutron flux in the EI layer. 10) The full set of layout drawing has been send to the MUON collaboration for approval. After the preliminary approval at the Eilat meeting, the procedure will start for an ATLAS wide approval. 11) An LHCC review of the MUON project took place on October 18th. The reviewers were positively impressed by the progress in the MUON spectrometer. The main points to be discussed in Eilat are the following: 1) Authorized the MUON layout drawings. 2) Come to a decision on the ground contact: although the base line is laser welding, there has been some progress in other methods, like a new spring design by Protvino. In order to come to to a decision on which methods can be authorized, 50 tubes of various types (laser welding a la Pavia, laser welding a la MPI, new Protvino spring and EM crimping) will go through an industrial ageing treatment. The results will be presented in Eilat. Any proposal for which no change of more than a factor of 20 has been observed between before and after ageing and that has not exceeded a resitivity of 100m-Ohm after ageing, will be a candidate for possible use by the various production sites. 3) Authorized the changes to the ground pin and signal cap design. 4) Authorized the Milestone list presented in the last ATLAS week, with the corresponding changes. 5) Division of work for the preparations of PRR-2 6) New visit to the MUON installation procedure: in order to prepare for the PRR2, a review will take place to find out where we stand in our installation procedure and what is our base-line as presented in the MUON-TDR, in order to see what aspects need to be revisited. This review will take place on Wednesday, before the meeting with the Technical Coordination. 7) Define a procedure to come to a decision on the polar sensors for the End-cap alignment. 8) Discussion on the strategy for the next year for the x-ray tomograph site certification. 9) Establish a procurement procedure and a set of responsible people for the availability of parts for Module-0, before the production parts become available for mass production. 10) Discussion on the MUON common fund. 11) Plan MUON meetings for 2000. The program for the Eilat meeting is as follows: Sunday 14/11 arrival in Tel-Aviv Monday 15/11 Visit of TGC production site, lunch and arrival at Eilat Tuesday 16/11 09:00-13:00 Layout meeting 15:00-17:00 Production Data-Base workshop 15:30-17:00 MDT WG-1 Integration 17:00-20:00 Alignment and Test results 20:00 Reception Wednesday 17/11 09:00-13:00 MUON system installation overview 15:00-17:00 MUON electronics 15:00-17:00 MDT engineering meeting 17:00-20:00 TC meets MUONS Thursday 18/11 09:00-13:00 Desert tour 15:00 - 17:00 MDT engineering meeting 17:00 - 20:00 MDT production site coordination 16:00 - 20:00 TC Meeting Friday 19/11 09:00-13:00 PC meeting 15:00-17:00 PC steering group 17:00-20:00 Software meeting Saturday 20/11 09:00-12:00 MUON plenary 12:00-13:00 MUON steering group 15:00-16:00 MUON IB 16:00-19:00 PC-IB 19:00- Banquet Sunday 21/11 Leave Eilat, arrival at Jerusalem The Layout meeting will concentrate on the approval of the MUON Layout and on the services for the various detectors. The Data-base workshop will include representatives of the various production sites that are directly involved with the production data-base. The alignment and test beam meeting will include, besides the regular presentations, a preparation of the known procedures and of the open points for the installation of the alignment sensors and alignment bars, to be presented in the installation meeting. It should also include a discussion on the H8 preparations. The test beam part should also include, besides the regular results, a discussion on modifications to the DAQ (in view of ROD -1) and of test beam simulations.
