SM Higgs searches, where we stand ( Yuanning Gao ) -------------------------------------------------- Yuanning summarized the current status of SM Higgs searches. A few new candidates pop up after LEPC. With total integrated luminosity of 130.7 pb**-1, 78 candidate events observed with 77.7 background from SM expected. The observation agrees well with background prediction. However the new higgs mass candidates observed in 4-jet channel ( one with very high NN output, together we have two golden candidates around 114 GeV/c^2 ) push the CLb, together with high mass candidates from Hll and taus with moderate signalness, to 4.5*10-4 level at 115.5. With no surprsing, the observed limit 110.1 GeV/c^2 is about 3 GeV/c^2 below median expected 113.0 GeV/c^2. One thing worth noting is that the Cs+b at 105.5 is 0.998, which means the observation is about 2 sigma higher than signal + background hypothesis. Then a channel by channel breakdown were shown. For 4jet channel, all the high mass candidates were produced at above 206 GeV. No excess from Hnn channel is observed. The high mass candidates from Hll all produced at around 205 GeV, which among other evidence, may indicate a fluctuation. Yuanning also showed some b-tagging studies in HTF. A detail comparision of NN4V b-tagging output observed from Z-peak data and MC shows a good agreement. Yuanning also updated his b-tagging staudies with Zgamma events and semileptonic WW decays, both show reasonable agreement between Data/MC. Finally, shadowed by the strong excess, Yuanning called the efforts to further study the candidate properties and possible systematic effects NN analyses: 4jet status ( Jinwei/Dieter/Marumi ) ------------------------------------------------- At preselection level, 1353 events observed in 4jet compared with 1372 expected from background. Variables are compared at preselection level, all show reasonable agreement between Data/MC. At final selection, 27 candidates observed compared with exactly 27 expected from SM. However for reconstructed Higgs mass above 110 GeV, 6 candidates observed with 3 background events expected. Among many plots, Jinwei showed a thrust distribution from 115 GeV signal MC. Our "golden candidate" showed in LEPC, with thrust 0.92 is not significantly too high for signal. Concerning the high mass candidates all near producution threshold, a question raised on the way the higgs mass was reconstructed: Do we artificially push the WW/ZZ/QQ background events to threshold? Dieter showed a plot with all candidates observed in 1999-2000 at various centre-of-mass energies, no such effect was found from previous year data. Then Jinwei showed a few dali plots and event properties of the new candidates observed at Higgs mass. Detail see his transparencies. Marumi showed some detail studies of the candidates. From pure event scan, events are classed as "golden (20%)", silver (70%) and brown (10%). Details can be discussed with the speaker, and our so called "golden" candidate actually fills in Marumi's "sliver" class. To conclude, no serious systematic effects were seen in 4-jet channel. NN analyses: Hnn status ( Jennifer Kile ) ----------------------------------------- In Hnn analysis, Data/MC agrees well both at preselection and selection level. No excess was found. Concerning only 0.7 signal event (115 GeV/c^2) was expected, no contridiction if there is signal. Jen showed one interesting candidate with 108 GeV/c^2 reconstructed mass. The event may be interperate as a WW-fusion event... Cuts analyses status report ( Gavin Davies ) -------------------------------------------- Gavin showed the cuts status and the studies done with Nikos and John Kennedy. First of all, a strong excess also observed in cut analyses supporting the results from NN analyses. Gavin then showed his "critical look" for the candidates. Details can be found from his transparencies. The breakdown of all channel cb's are shown. All Y2K data gives Cb 0.9995 at 115.5, driven mostly from 4-jet 0.9985. Hnn is in a bit deficit 0.4 and both Hll and Htt are high. From his critical look, Gavin suggests to further study the effects from i) ISR in 4-jet; ii) Higgs-Z mass anti-correlation in Hll -- use Mh+Mz-91.2 as in 4jet to reconstruct Higgs mass is suggested. Actually the first studies by Nikos showed the mass resolution is slightly better when this method is used. A.O.B ----- Some selected information will be shown in the "spokesmen's meeting" in the afternoon by Peter Mcnamara. Dieter anounced the Z-run requested by ALEPH to correct our TPC short has been granted.
