Learning physics from ALEPH events

The aim of the following pages is to provide some means for students to improve their knowledge of particle physics by playing with some real data recently collected in the ALEPH experiment. To make it possible we provide some description of the experiment, of its detector and of some physics topics which are simple enough to be presented here.

The ALEPH Experiment

A first look at what can be seen in the detector

Look at an electron-positron collision seen along the beam axis. The positrons enter into the plane of the diagram and the electrons leave the plane.
The electrons and positrons collide at the interaction point at the center of the detector. The center of the LEP ring is toward the right side of the diagram.

The detector

Before having a look at physics it may be good to learn about the ALEPH Detector. You will then be able to understand the way the particles interact with the different elements of the detector, leaving a trace of their nature.

In the following pages we will try to give you the possibility to learn some particle physics from looking at and histograming ALEPH events.
