The CEM Group

 

The Controls Electronics and Mechatronics (CEM) group develops and maintains a centralized competence in controls hardware and low-level software, electronics design, production and radiation tolerance, mechatronics and robotics, test and measurement systems.

The group is responsible, in collaboration with the equipment groups, for the specification, design, procurement, integration, installation, commissioning and operation of low-level hardware controls infrastructure for all CERN Accelerators, their transfer lines and the Experimental Areas. The domain of responsibility extends from the field buses, the accelerators timing up to the embedded real-time front-end computers and the most generic custom controls electronic modules, for which low-level software is also developed (i.e. Linux device drivers, C/C++ libraries and associated test programs).

The group provides a CERN central service for the layout, industrialization and production of electronic cards and systems based on industrial standards and on particle detectors specific technologies. It is also in charge of maintaining a competence in the development of radiation-tolerant electronics, and provides CERN-wide support for radiation tests, radiation test facilities and radiation monitoring for evaluating the dose to electronics installed in radiation areas. It offers expertise for application-specific designs requiring R&D in domains where CERN is at the forefront of technological development, such as synchronisation and motion control.

The group is involved in the design and is responsible for the operation of the mechatronics of the LHC collimators and all other beam-intercepting devices (BIDs) of the CERN accelerators and experimental lines. It provides general mechatronics support for the Accelerator and Technology Sector. The development of robotic solutions and their use to support equipment groups on remote inspections and tele-manipulation in radioactive areas is a key responsibility of the CEM group. It also develops and provides CERN-wide support for all test & measurement systems based on LabVIEW and a selected set of commercial off-the-shelf products.
