Editorial

This 2nd CNL edition of the Year comes at an unusual time, in the middle of the Summer period. In order to have a better planning for the last CNL edition (before the Christmas break) we have reduced the number of issues for year 2000 to three, instead of the usual four publication. In consequence we have advanced the deadline for the next and last edition of this year, to be:
   Friday, November 17th
We will welcome all your contributions (not restricted to coming from IT division) at that time!

This summer edition is quite "light", but we think that the quality is high. We particularly draw your attention to two "dense" contributions we have received for the "Learning Zone":

  1. The 3rd (and last) part of the tutorial series on the new KDE and GNOME standards. We would like to thank very much Victor Robles and German Cancio for writing this very detailed and interesting tutorial, and sharing with us their own experience.
  2. A detailed explanation, with many useful references, of the usage of Plugins and Components, for application development in a non-monolithic and open approach. We also thank very much Paula Valença for providing this tutorial.

Either by pure chance, or for some unknown reason, we have to emphasise that these two tutorials were both provided by members of the IT/PDP group ! We hope that it will encourage other IT groups to follow the same initiative, and, as stated in the last CNL, help us to give more weight to the "educational" part.

With this CNL issue we have also started our new electronic article check-in procedure, directly accessible from the CNL Home Page (link on Article Submission form), or at URL:

http://cern.ch/ref/cnl/submit

The complete procedure is explained in detailed in the "Submission help Page", at URL:
http://cern.ch/ref/cnl/help/submit
We should note that this new registration procedure allows any users to see "on-line" the evolution of the draft CNL, before it is officially produced on the Web (and approved by the division management).

Let us finish this editorial in the hope that you will enjoy reading this NewsLetter issue,

Nicole Crémel,
CNL Editor, IT/User Support
