Beware of Opening Attachments in E-Mail

Denise Heagerty , IT/IS

Following the recent e-mail viruses you are asked to be cautious when opening e-mail attachments on your PC. Attachments that are apparently harmless might hide executable content that is activated when the attachment is opened.

On the PC Windows infrastructure, CERN runs software to protect users from known viruses, but new ones can sometimes arrive before our software recognises them. They can infect your system when you open an attachment and can result in data loss or corruption on your PC's local disk and your home directory.

To remove them it may be necessary to re-install the Windows software on your PC.

CERN anti-virus information is available at http://www.cern.ch/pcvirus
