News from the User Support Book Shop

Jutta Megies, Roger Woolnough , IT/User Support

Since the last edition of the CNL the principle change at the bookshop has been the arrival of the Windows 2000 and Office 2000 books. In the last edition I indicated we hoped to get an arrangement with Hachette but unfortunately this proved too complicated so I await the Frankfurt book fair to make arrangements for us to stock French/English dictionaries from another source.

There have not been many new editions since the last report but recently we received "The Java Programming Language" in its third edition, "Thinking Java" second edition and by the time the CNL is published the new edition from O'Reilly of "The Linux System Administrators Guide" should be in stock.

The book from O'Reilly, "CGI Programming with Perl", has finally been re-released, having been out of print for a long time. We now have plenty in stock.

Other new books added to the list are :

  1. The Complete Red Hat Linux Training Course, an interactive CD and book
  2. The XML Companion
  3. Labview student edition and CD
  4. The Dreamweaver 3 Bible
  5. Practical Java
  6. Fortran 77 for Engineers and Scientists
  7. Antimatter (by Gordon Fraser)

For those of you wishing to start with Windows 2000 we have two specialised books "The Windows 2000 Resource Kit" from Microsoft Press and from Pearson the "Ultimate Windows 2000 System Administrators Guide". For the general user the book from Mc.Graw Hill, "Windows 2000, the Complete Reference" is a good learning tool and reference guide.

For users of Office 2000 we have chosen the series we used before, the Microsoft Press tutorial series "Step by step" and the reference books "Running". From this selection we have examples for Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, Project and FrontPage 2000. We also stock the popular "Using" series as an alternative and here we have the following titles available Word, Access, Excel, Word and Excel, Outlook, Office and FrontPage 2000. To complete the list we have a new book from O'Reilly, "Outlook 2000 in a Nutshell".

The complete list of books and prices is available at http://consult.cern.ch/books/ or you can mail us at bookshop@cern.ch where we always welcome suggestions for new titles.
