The CNL - 35 years of History at your Fingertips

Julien Gavaggio, and Miguel Marquina , IT/User Support

Abstract

History is important. It serves our memory when our memories fail. We have been recovering the indexes to the CNL issues published since 1966.

The CERN Computing Newsletter itself reflects somehow the History of Computing. The first issue saw light in February 15, 1966. It was just eight type-written pages and talked about the CDC 6600, usage policy for an IBM 1401, problems with the card punch... and surprise, surprise, an invitation to users to contact the Program Enquiry Office in case of suspected machine errors (imagine our graffiti with "User Support was here!" :-)).

For this reason we have decided to make available the CNL indexes in electronic form, so that they can be searched for and examined. We did not go as far as to scan the issues themselves, but we will very likely place articles here and there as requesters ask for specific material. After all, we are the privileged owners of a complete CNL series, and we intend to share them for the joy of our readers.

All indexes are available from the CNL Web pages:

Your feedback will be much appreciated as to the form in which they are presented.

About the author(s): Julien came as a short term assignment to work for one month among us. With this small project as an excuse, he has learnt perl and gained some insight into the mailing system. Now he has bit the flavours of what programming fun can be. We wish him all the best for the future.
