Registration of Portable Computers

Mike Gerard , IT / CS

All portable computers which are used on the CERN site and connect to the CERN network on network outlets dedicated to portable computers must be registered in the network data base. These outlets are normally indicated by an information sheet placed close by, giving some details on how to use them. Amongst other information the registration must include the MAC (Media Access Control) address of the interface card.

This requirement applies both to CERN staff using portables and to visitors bringing their own portables. It is particularly necessary in order that for any observed problems related to use of the portable the person responsible for the computer can be contacted immediately.

Portable computers which connect to the network via Wireless adapters, for which some particular rooms of CERN are equipped, should be registered in the same way. For these computers the MAC address will be that of the adapter itself. If, however, a portable has both a normal cable interface and a wireless interface then it is the normal interface MAC address which should be registered first. Once this registration has been made the wireless card MAC address should later be communicated by an email to

Network.Operations@cern.ch
Portables should NOT be connected onto an outlet dedicated to a particular computer or set of computers: the outlets concerned will not accept to offer a dynamic IP address and it is NOT ACCEPTABLE to impersonate a different system by "borrowing" its IP address, even temporarily.

For further details please consult the IT/CS Web page, which was created specifically for visitors but is also relevant to CERN staff, at

Finally, be reminded that all requests related to connections of equipment to the CERN network should be made via the Web form

In case of problems the Network Operations Office (74927) will be happy to provide assistance.
