This article is just an update of the article on ``Unix Based Interactive Computing Platforms'' written in the last Computer Newsletter (CNL 220, section 2.2). If you did not do it already, you are invited first to read this article in order to have a global description of the Unix-based Interactive Computing platforms, with the Work Group Servers (WGS) and Public Login Unix Servers (PLUS), that are being provided as a replacement for the CERNVM system.
In another article in the last CNL (CNL 220, section 2.3, ``Common HEP Unix Environment''), Arnaud Taddei described the scripts we support to provide group and user customisation of the shell environment. We are now able to support a full user and group customisable Graphic environment for X Terminal, workstation or PC users. This environment is described in a later article in this CNL (section ).
Two PLUS clusters are now available:
is an IBM AIX-based PLUS service running on 16 nodes of CERN's SP2 system and has been offered as a production service for over six months; many articles about the SP2 and the CERNSP service have been published in recent Computer Newsletters.
is an HPUX-based PLUS service. It currently runs on seven HP 735/125 workstations and a further three will be available soon. Please see the article below ``HPPLUS: A new Public Login Unix Service'' for more details about this new cluster.
If you would like an account on either of these systems then just ask your group administrator to create one for you.
The updated list of Work Group Servers is:
If you are a member of one of these groups then you should contact your group administrator and ask for an account.
The updated list of WGS and PLUS cluster names is shown in the table below:
If you have an NCD X terminal which is configured to boot from one of the central X terminal boot servers, you will find all of these services listed in the menu for both Telnet and XDM (via the ``New Login Session'' option). CHORUS and CMS users will probably find that their X terminals automatically connect to the appropriate Work Group Server.
