Purchases of SCSI Discs

  Alan Silverman CN/DCI

In order to speed up the process of ordering small numbers of additional discs for workstations and in order to introduce a limited service for their installation and maintenance, CERN has concluded an agreement with a supplier of third-party discs (Seagate, Quantum, IBM, etc). Under this agreement, the vendor will publish a list of the most common discs -- 1, 2, 4 and 9 GB models, all in various SCSI configurations. The prices and the exact contents of these options will be updated monthly in order to follow this fast-moving market as quickly as possible. The current prices can be obtained from Cristina Lara in Finance Division (Cristina_Lara@macmail.cern.ch) or Alan Silverman or Christiane Ball of CN's UNIX Workstation Support (workstation.support@cern.ch).

The intention of this agreement is to ease purchases of single discs or small quantities of discs. Groups wishing to purchase large quantities should contact one of the persons above first.

The vendor offers to install the devices for a small additional fee (SFr 80) and this should be ordered at purchase time as well as any required SCSI cables or terminators. Also at purchase time one should specify if the disc is to be mounted in a box; this costs SFr 50 per disc.

The discs are guaranteed for 3 or 5 years depending on model and the vendor is offering replacement within 2 working days while the damaged disc is returned to the factory.
