Netscape/UNIX version 2.0 at CERN

Netscape Corporation released version 2.0 of its popular Netscape Navigator on February 2nd, 1996. This new release includes a full MIME compliant Mail Agent and News Reader. More information about the specific features of this release can be found at the Netscape WWW site (http://home.netscape.com).

The Unix version, available at CERN since February 8th through the command:

netscape -version beta

has been evaluated in its functions as Mail and News agent. We have prepared an automatic setup procedure for all Unix workstations at CERN accessing the asis repository (including the Central Services cernsp and hpplus) which performs all the configuration actions necessary to use Netscape for such functions. This procedure is executed the first time Netscape is invoked or by using the ``reset'' option.

Incidentally, when using Netscape as Mail agent, please notice that you will need to know the password of your Mail Server account (MailServer Service). If you don't know it please contact the UCO ( User.Support@cern.ch, x4952 ) to get it reset.

Netscape 2.0 became the default version in the ASIS Server on February 26th, replacing the current one (1.1N). Further details about Netscape at CERN can be found at:

http://consult.cern.ch/uco/netscape

Support (limited to the areas described above) is offered through the e-mail address: Netscape.Support@cern.ch.

Finally, on a related subject, please notice that within the next month the UCO will receive from Netscape Press their new book and CD-ROM ``Netscape Navigator 2.0''. This includes all information and the software for this product (Unix, PC and Mac versions). We will announce its availability when it arrives, through the usual cern.computing newsgroup channel.
