New Data Management Section in PDP Group

In order to adapt to the evolution of the data management services provided by the PDP group in CN and to make the best use of the available resources, both PDP sections formerly dealing with the hardware and the software aspects of data management have been merged into a new section called DM (Data Management), led by Fabrizio Gagliardi.

The major activities of this new section are:

-
Management and operation of the tape volumes in the computer centre vault and associated tape and robotic devices
-
Introduction of a fully automated service based on modern commercially available robots and high density tapes
-
Migration of user data to high density media
-
Migration of TMS and all other production utilities from VM to Unix
-
Continued support of data services for the current experiments
-
Evolution of the CORE data service architecture towards the requirements of new experiment such as NA48, NA49, LHC test beams etc.
-
Consolidation and evolution of the Central Data Recording service
-
Investigation and prototyping of HSM systems
-
Collaboration with LHC experiments and projects such as RD45 on the evolution of the general data management models.

A series of internal technical discussions to review the current activities and to plan future developments has been started with the participation of external experts from CN division and outside. The first two subjects have been TMS and the Tape Automation project. Other subjects will follow in the near future.

The section is composed of the following staff: David Asbury, Marisa Barja, Jean Philippe Baud, Charles Curran, Lenny Hoejenbos, Antonio Maver, Richard Minchin, a French co-operant Stephane Gonthier and a technical student Claire Redmond.

Two Majordomo lists have been set-up to report problems and explain solutions: TAPESW and TAPESW-SUPPORT.
