A new public archive service, called pubarch, is now available in UNIX to replace VMARCHIVE on CERNVM. pubarch can be used to archive any file stored on AFS, from any AFS client supporting Kerberos and arc, for example cernsp and hpplus. (See below to check if your personal workstation supports these.) The archived data is stored on an AIX ADSM server, using IBM 3590 drives in the IBM 3494 robot.
For example, to archive your myfile file in your mydir directory, you would enter:
pubarch archive "~/mydir/myfile"
To list all your archived files, enter:
pubarch list -subdir "~*" > archive.list
and to retrieve one of your archived files:
pubarch retrieve -v "~/mydir/myfile"
This archive service is meant for long term storage; it is NOT a backup service to be used on a regular basis: every time you archive a file, an additional copy is stored on the server.
pubarch is available, on ASIS, for AIX versions 3 and 4, HP-UX 9 and Sun Solaris. It uses the arc (Authenticated Remote Control) procedure, which requires a Kerberos ticket. These are automatically available on machines installed by the SUE installation procedures.
For more information, see the pubarch man page.
