General (Miguel Marquina CN/DCI)
Question
Is there a list with the location of all rooms with public access and terminals
(especially X terminals) at CERN?
Answer
The concept of ``Public Terminal Room'' does not exist anymore at CERN.
However there are still four public pools, all managed locally
(and not by the Computer Center):
- In building 513 (Computer Center), ground floor, you can find
public X terminals
and Falcos, managed by the UCO (HELP desk from CN division).
The typical usage for this pool is to have access to the public
printers located nearby. Public PCs, managed by the AS division, are also
available there.
- In the administration building (bldg 61), some terminals are
available and managed by the ``Users Office''.
- LEAR experiments have a public terminal pool in building 6 (R-006).
- In Prevessin there is a public pool in building 892 (SD-003).
However CERN visitors are normally attached to some experiment, or are
visiting someone at CERN, and consequently they should ask their
host for a place where they can work.
Question
Who can help in setting the connections for an X terminal ?
Answer
This is done by people from an external entreprise reachable by
e-mail at address
xterminal.support@cern.ch.
(In case of emergency phone 76478).

Question
Is it possible to open multiple INBOXes from a pine session?
Answer
It is now possible from a single pine session (from version 3.93)
to access multiple
mailboxes either on the CERN mailserver or on other mailservers
providing an IMAP service.
To do this you must know the mailserver password of the additional
mailboxes you wish to access as in the example below:
- Go to the FOLDER LIST screen by typing 'L' and place the cursor
in one of the folders in the ``Incoming Message Folders'' (e.g. the INBOX).
- Type 'A', the message ``Name of server to contain added folder :''
appears in the bottom status line.
- Type 'mail.cern.ch/user=<username>', where <username> is the account
you want to access, and press RETURN.
- The message ``Folder on mail.cern.ch/user=<username> to add :''
appears in the status line.
Type 'inbox' and press RETURN.
- The message ``Nickname for folder "inbox" :'' appears.
Type the nickname you want to appear in the ``Incoming Message
Folders'' and press RETURN.
- You are prompted for the password of the account <username> on the
mail server.
When you open the new inbox the nickname is permanently added to the
``Incoming Message Folders''. If you cancel ('^C') at any stage the
operation is not completed.
For other IMAP servers just replace mail.cern.ch with the name of the
server in the operations above.
