New WWW Interface to the Accounting Services

Akos Frohner and Attila Koppanyi CN/DCI

Accounting data collection, maintenance and report generation procedures developed on CERNVM ran under that system for several years, focussing on providing management and users with resource usage information. The scheme was subject to continual enhancements reflecting the changes in the nature of the division's services. The end of CERNVM has necessitated a complete rewrite of the code. It also presented a good opportunity to automate much of it, making use of the latest techniques, particularly in the area of presentation.

Keeping its concepts, the scheme was transferred to the UNIX world. Via WWW the weekly reports are now available to everyone with access to the Web. The reports are either in HTML or plain text format. Users with Java-enabled browsers (Netscape, Internet Explorer) can click on graphics applets to show (certain) data in graphical form. For those nostalgic about CERNVM, the plain text format will produce printouts similar to those of the past.

The URL of the Accounting Service page on the Web is:

CPU usage - the ``runacc'' utility

The tcl procedure runacc, intended to run under CERNSP for centrally operated UNIX services, is avaliable for general use, to replace runacc under CERNVM. It reports on the cpu totals used by: over a period of specified weeks.

runacc also reports budgets allocated and used for services and groups subjected to budgeting when the ``tot'' option is selected.

For more details please see the man page.
