Summertime Change

  Judy Richards CN/DCI

Economies needed everywhere - save more daylight!

These days we are being requested to make economies everywhere and so from this year on we have to save more daylight. Therefore the validity period for ``daylight saving time'' or ``summertime'' will stretch until the last Sunday of October throughout Europe instead of ending on the last Sunday in September.

Many of the computers at CERN have done the switching from MET (Middle European Time) to MET DST (Middle European Time - Daylight Saving Time) and back in the past without human intervention, but now, i.e. BEFORE SEPTEMBER 29, they must be told that from this year on they should not switch back from MET DST to MET at the end of September but wait until the end of October. The spring change from MET to METDST is not modified.

The changes needed will of course be handled by CN Division for all the machines in the Computer Centre, but many other computers, principally Unix and VMS systems, in offices, control rooms and labs will have to be told about this change of date. Instructions on what needs to be done can be found on the web at URL:

http://wsspinfo.cern.ch/file/dst.html

Briefly:

PCs running NICE/NICE95 - no action needed (they automatically
synchronize their time with the Novell
                                   servers)
MACs - no special action needed since no
                                   automatic procedure exists
VMS machines - action needed BEFORE SEPTEMBER 29th
                                   (consult the Web)
Sun/Solaris machines running SUE - no action needed
HP and AIX machines running SUE - reboot needed BEFORE SEPTEMBER 29th
All other Unix machines - action needed BEFORE SEPTEMBER 29th
                                   (consult the Web)
N.B. SUE stands for ``Standardized Unix Environment''. More information on SUE can be found in the Web, at URL: http://wwwinfo.cern.ch/dci/sue/
