General (Miguel Marquina CN/DCI)

Question

How can I access UNIX files which are in some afs public area with Netscape or Mosaic on my PC? (e.g. /afs/cern.ch/user/u/uco/public/test.html)

I have tried to use the form: http://home.cern.ch/~uco/public/ but then I get the error message:

The file: /afs/cern.ch/user/u/uco/www/public/test.html doesn't exist

Answer

/afs/cern.ch/user/u/uco/public/test.html is a UNIX (afs) ``file specification'', and in WWW terms it corresponds to the URL:
file://localhost/afs/cern.ch/user/u/uco/public/test.html
But this only works from a UNIX machine. It has been decided on UNIX not to make HOME URLs equivalent to HOME directories, for preserving privacy. Consequently, on UNIX:
http://home.cern.ch/~uco/
has be made equivalent to
/afs/cern.ch/user/u/uco/www/
where only the subdirectory "www" is fully exposed. It means that the user who wants to provide files through WWW must take a concious action. This has been explained in detail in an article in CNL 223 (``Anonymous ftp access using WWW'', paragraph ``Publishing files through WWW'').

About Mail (Miguel Marquina CN/DCI)

Question

How do I change my "real computer mailbox address" referred to by the generic address Firstname.Surname@cern.ch?

Answer

This address is called your ``Preferred E-mail Address'' or ``pem'' (look at article ``Obvious Names, Generic Addresses and Preferred Email Addresses'' in CNL 222 for more information).

For the moment (but look at the article on "How to Inspect and Update your Information in the Computer Centre Database"), there are three ways of changing this address, depending on what kind of accounts you have:

  1. If you have accounts on a central machine, e.g.:
    • CERNSP
    • VXCERN
    • HPPLUS
    • DXPLUS
    • or any Work Group Server (alice_wgs, atlas_wgs, chorus_wgs, cms_wgs, cn_wgs, na48_wgs, na49_wgs, ...)
please login to one of these accounts and change your e-mail address yourself via the command emdir.
  2. If you have any other accounts let your computer group administrator do the change for you via the program xuserreg.
  3. If you have no accounts on any public service, and you therefore cannot find out your group administrator, please send a mail to User.Registration@cern.ch asking her to change your e-mail address. In this case please give your full name, division as well as the old and the new address.

Question

Going back to my home institute, I would like to set up an automatic forwarding so that all mails sent to me at CERN on the mail server are automatically sent to my mailbox at my home institute. How shall I proceed?

Answer

The easiest way is to use the mailfwd command with the option -i (or -interactive). After typing mailfwd -i (from CERNSP or HPPLUS) you will get the menu:
The user has an account on the Mail Server
All possibilities of this command are enabled
You may want to:
   0 - Cancel
1 - Get the status of the forwards
2 - Easily setup your forward using a menu
3 - Add new forward entries (for example new e-mail address)
4 - Delete some forward entries
5 - Reset the forward to empty file(s)
6 - Treats only local forwarding on you local Home directory
7 - Treats only remote forwarding on the Mail Server
You can first check the status of the forwards by choosing option 1 and you will get something like:
The forward file in <userid> 's Home directory is pointing to:
-----------------------------------------------------------
<userid>@mail.cern.ch
(This applies to all your AFS accounts)

Contacting the mail server biff.cern.ch ...
There is no forward file on the Mail Server so mail for
this machine is being delivered to <userid> 's central mailbox
If you want to set an automatic forwarding from the mail server to your home institute mailbox, you simply use option 7:
7 - Treats only remote forwarding on the Mail Server
and then the option 2:
2 - Add new forward entries (for example new e-mail address)
you will be prompted with:
Enter the entries (usually addresses) you want to add
 in the forward list:

 (Enter 'return' to end)
You can then enter your mail box address at your home institute.

When you are back at CERN, you wish probably to get back your mail on the mail server; for this, you issue again from CERNSP or HPPLUS the command mailfwd -i with option 7 (Treats only remote forwarding on the Mail Server) and then option 4 to reset the forward to empty file(s).

NICE 95 (Jason Oh CN/DCI)

Below is a selection of questions and answers related to NICE95. A more extensive list can be obtained on WWW via URL http://wwwinfo.cern.ch/uco/FAQs#nice95

Question

Where can I find a list of the NICE divisional representatives?

Answer

This information can be found

Question

Where can I get my NICE NT password reset?

Answer

Send an e-mail to the User Consultancy Office (User.Support@cern.ch). Please note this is the same as asking for your Novell password to be reset except the assigned password is case sensitive.

Question

My icons on NICE95 are too big/small. How can I change them?

Answer

Click on the Start button then:
From here you can change the general font size, the display resolution and colour palette.

Note: Do not change the graphics driver in the system icon, unless you know exactly what you are doing.

Question

I am using Microsoft mail and I have it set to autologin. Is there anyway I can disable this?

Answer

Yes, when the window Starting Mailbox xxxxxx in x seconds appears: click on cancel, then the normal mailstub will appear, then uncheck remember my password.

N.B. Having the password set is the recommended NICE procedure.

Question

I am using a PC running Windows 95 (NICE 95). Is it possible to capture a window and embed it into a document?

Answer

Yes, make sure the window is "In Focus", then press <ALT-PRT SC>. This will capture the image to the clipboard, then from your desired application, e.g. word, select paste. To capture the whole desktop just press <PRT SC>.

Question

I used to be able to ftp from my UNIX station to my Novell account. I don't seem to be able to this anymore. What is the solution?

Answer

The login name in ftp should now be .login_name.users.cern. (The configuration has changed and it is no longer .login_name.first_initial.users.cern)
