When the central MAILSERVer became available for general use last
spring, we announced that we planned to phase out AFSmail. The time
for doing this is now approaching, with a target date of June 30th.
If you are a pine
user it is very straightforward to migrate
to the MAILSERVer and you will hardly notice any difference.
xwho
or the Web
`Directories' page.
If you have a single AFS userid this should be the case. If you have
multiple AFS userids you should check not only whether you have an
account on MAILSERV but also whether it has your `preferred' userid.
If you need to create or modify a MAILSERV account, contact your group
administrator.
mailmigrate
in order to have your setup modified to use the mail server.
The command performs the following actions:
pine
folder named `AFS-mbox1';
pine
configuration to look for your INBOX on the
MAILSERVer.
pine
, just as before, provided you are
logged into
one of the UNIX servers in the Computer Centre (PLUS or WGS machine).
xuserinfo
command on one of the central
servers and click on the `Mail Info' button.
(If you have only line-mode access, you should use the
emdir
command.)
xuserinfo
command to
register your workstation as a recognized host.
Otherwise, when you try to access the MAILSERVer you will be requested
for your MAILSERVer password, which you
probably don't know!
mailmigrate
to update your configuration;
xuserinfo
to register your Preferred EMail address.
If you have advertized your email address in the generic form (firstname.familyname@cern.ch) this change will be transparent to your correspondents. If people send mail to your afsmail address it will automatically be forwarded to the MAILSERVer.
Since it is so easy, why don't you do it now ? This will save us having to bother you again. In addition, in May and June various configuration defaults will be changed from afsmail to mail, and if you don't have a forward set from the MAILSERVer to your afsmail account, you could end up with mail arriving in your MAILSERVer mailbox without your realizing it.
