The interface acronym stands for
Majordomo On Web - General Listbox Interface,
and it is a WWW interface accesible via the Netscape browser to the ListBox
services at CERN. It provides the possibility of interacting with the ListBox
mailing lists without having to connect to any UNIX service. This is specially
useful for those who have only PC or Macintosh at their desk.
Main page
When invoked, MOWGLI presents the user a table of servers, sets and mailing
lists to select.
Mailing list servers
Even if there is only one central mailing list server at CERN
(listbox.cern.ch), several `virtual servers' are defined for the physics
experiments (e.g.: atlas-lb.cern.ch, delphi-lb.cern.ch,
na48-lb.cern.ch, etc.)
so that the number of displayed lists is not too big.
By default, MOWGLI shows the sets and lists described to listbox.cern.ch, but
it can be made to display other virtual servers, e.g. with the URL
http://consult.cern.ch/htbin_cern/mowgli?atlas-lb.
List sets
Related mailing lists at listbox are grouped in sets
(e.g.: as, hep,
it-support, th, etc.) to ease navigation.
By default, all lists from all sets are displayed.
When a server and/or a group is selected, only the relevant lists are
displayed.
List page
When a list is selected, a new Web page is displayed allowing the user to
interact with it.
A list page can be reached directly, e.g. with the URL
http://consult.cern.ch/htbin_cern/mowgli?uco@listbox.cern.ch.
Selected commands are stored in memory and a button at the top of the page
sends all cummulated commands
to the ListBox server. User authentication (through the
browser mail agent) is skipped for registered users.
The list page is made of several sections:
- General Commands
To send general commands, not related to any particular list
(help, lists, which).
- List Information
To post to the list, or to send commands to get information about the list (info,
who). In addition to that, registered users can display the list contents and
owner on the browser and print the list.
- Registration
To subscribe/unsubscribe users to the list.
- File and Mail Archiving
To get the index and the contents of the list archive.
