General
(Miguel Marquina and the UCO team, IT/User Support)
userreg"
". It is up
to the group administrator to decide whether someone can get such an account.
A registration form for "external user" should be signed by the administrator
and sent back to the UCO.
To know who can act as a "group administrator"
for this user type "xwho <name>
", where <name>
is the name of someone registered at CERN and who will work with this user.
You will see the group code(s) that can be given to the user for
registration, and clicking (or hitting <CR>) on this code you
will get the list of all the group administrators.
/tmp
filesystem.
On CERNSP this is deliberately small (i.e. 50 MB). User applications
can use a bigger 500 MB file system called /tmp/scratch
.
On a batch node this is automatically set up as $WORK
.
On an interactive node a user should type:
mkdir /tmp/scratch/userid: (N.B. the ':' is needed)and write in there scratch files. (N.B. They are removed soon after logout.)
Mail and News Issues
(Miguel Marquina and the UCO team, IT/User Support)
pine
is a mail client (or agent) that uses IMAP, whereas Netscape
Mail
in "Netscape Version 3"
is a mail client that uses another protocol called "POP" (POP3).
Note that, in the future, "Netscape Version 4" will also
offer IMAP support.
IMAP is more modern and powerful, POP is easier to use but with more
limitations. At CERN the "mail server" is the machine called
MAILSERV (or mail.cern.ch
).
X11 (X Terminal, X-Window System)
xlock
, this is just a resource of this application that
has probably been removed (a change in the system configuration files for
X resources). This can be controlled either with a command line
option (xlock -/+allowroot
) or an X resource. Look at the
"Guide for the Usage
of X Window at CERN"
for precise information on the setting of X-Window resources.
NICE 95 (Jason Oh, IT/User Support)
You can find a precise description of the supported hardware at URL:
http://itdiswww.cern.ch/PC/pchome.HTML
If you want access to the NICE environment you must restrict your choice to one of the PC described in this list.
N.B. The hardware required for "Home Access to the CERN Network" as well as the "Installation instructions" are well descibed in the guide "Home Access to the CERN Network from Windows/95" accessible at URL:
http://nicewww.cern.ch/doc/acb/acb.htm
the Start button ==> Settings ==> Control Panel ==> Cern Settings click on the Startup Tab and click on addso for example for CERNSP put
or for Netscape enter
WI32 "Z:\P32\n_nav3\nice\Netscape.wi2"
How can I solve this?
Once this happens, the person responsible for the Linux PC is asked to either switch off or reconfigure immediately. If he cannot be contacted, the PC is blocked. Even then, users in the same segment will continue to be affected until that PC is switched off.
Therefore, if you experience this problem, you must inform the local administrators or contact the UCO immediately. You will then need to ask the local administrator to come and stop this blank NDS dialog box from appearing so you will then be able to login normally. Note that the IT/DIS/OSE (Open System Environment) is trying to warn Linux users not to configure their system in this way to reduce this problem (see the article "Linux Network Problems" in this CNL).
Be aware that when you use a font that is not installed by default on NICE, the document cannot be opened on a different computer unless you have installed the same font on the other computer.
Thefore, we do not recommed you to disable news at startup.
We will try to make this feature faster in the future (like for the case when there is no news waiting to be read). We promise to keep the news short, precise and not too frequent.
