Access to Internet Dictionaries at CERN

  Miguel Marquina IT/User Support

CERN being an international institution, questions are brought up regularly by users of our Computing facilities as to what kind of online dictionaries and translator tools could be used to cope with the creation and maintenance of multi-lingual documentation.

One aspect of this kind of task concerns the production of documents in a given language. There, NICE and Macintosh users are well off through using the "Spelling and Grammar" and the "Language" (including thesaurus and hyphenation) components of MS-Word (present in the "Tools" menu).

Although a native Microsoft Office suite is not available for UNIX platforms, UNIX users of our public services have access to "Framemaker" (in addition to this being an alternative for NICE and Mac users too). Details on access, installation and setup instructions are available at:

http://www.cern.ch/PTTOOL/FrameMaker/

Another aspect is the translation process, when you may need to check on the correct wording in a language which is not your mother tongue. There are different products available in the market to do this work locally on your machine. However a number of Dictionary sets have been appearing in the Internet and we have made a compilation at:

http://wwwinfo.cern.ch/support/internet-dictionaries

As this page is just a collection of links to sites elsewhere, we cannot guarantee that they will continue working indefinitely. However we offer to maintain this page with uptodate information as far as it is known to us. Please feel free to send your suggestions if you learn about dictionaries which, from your point of view, are of better quality.

I would like to call your attention specifically to the EURODICAUTOM Translator, which is a very interesting EC project now in its initial phase. You will find at our page the full interface (quite rich in options and very powerful) and two subsets of relevance at CERN, namely the English-French and French-English translators. In our opinion this interface satisfies the requirements of standard CERN users regarding the European multi-lingual issue.
