Book News from the UCO

  Roger Woolnough IT/User Support

Since the last CNL we have received the following books: second editions of Unix Power Tools, and Effective C++ as well as the new Perl book from O'Reilly, Advanced Perl.

For PC users I include below a list of new titles. Due to the success of the Excel Bible from IDG books we have decided to stock titles for both Office and Word. There are two new O'Reilly titles, the Windows NT file system internals is particularly complete. We have been asked for books on Project and so have just got a book in the Using series but as there was none for 97 the book is in the 98 series.

  1. Office 97 Bible
  2. Word 97 Bible
  3. Using Project 98
  4. Windows NT file system internals
  5. Word Annoyances
  6. Visual Basic Power OOP 5

Linux software has been a problem, but just to keep up with the demand ! We obtained the official Red Hat software along with a good stock of the Dr Linux books. The software was soon out of stock and we are now getting new stock from a European supplier to avoid the delays. We can now ensure an adequate stock of Applixware and Motif on site by the time this CNL is published and we will also have plenty of copies of both 4.1 and 4.2 available.

Several new books are in stock for UNIX, including a second edition of the book from Stevens, Unix Network Programming. This is in fact Volume 1 of what will be a 3-volume series, although the other two are not scheduled until end-1998. Due to the success of the Comment faire series for PC users we have a few copies of the Unix book in the same series.

Other books that have arrived since the previous CNL are listed below:

  1. C++ for Fortran Programmers
  2. Tk Tcl Tools
  3. Using HTML 3.2, Java & CGI
  4. Java in a Nutshell Deluxe edition
  5. Developing Java Beans
  6. Oracle SQL high performance tuning
  7. Physicists Guide to Mathematica

As usual these books are available via TID, EDH or cash at the UCO Help Desk (building 513). A full list of titles, prices and stock available can be found at

http://consult.cern.ch/books.

We encourage users to consult this list and check specially if it is in "Stock" before coming to the UCO "Help Desk".

Please also read the new instructions for book ordering which we will initiate in the New Year: this is explained in detail in the previous article of this CNL, "New Book Ordering Procedure at the UCO".
