Some Mail "Tips" (Pine or Netscape with the Mail Server)

Judy Richards IT/DIS (for the Mail Support team)

In this article the "Mail Services" team at CERN review some important and useful "tips" related to e-mail on the central services.

Three topics are proposed for this CNL:

  1. Displaying the size of your messages in Netscape 4
  2. Moving folders to the Mail Server using pine
  3. Netscape/mail crashes on MAC

1. Displaying the size of your messages in Netscape

Unlike pine, the default Netscape display does not show the size of individual messages when you display a folder. If you want to see the size of your messages, simply click a few times on the left arrow at the top right-hand side of the header line and the 'Size' column will appear!

2. Moving folders to the Mail Server using pine

Since the format of mail folders is dependent on the system, it is not possible to move mail folders from one machine to the Mail Server simply using a 'copy' or 'ftp' command. It has to be done with a command that understands the folder format.

Moving a folder from VXCERN or AFS to the Mail Server is possible with pine, but certainly not obvious! So here is a recipe:

Note that Netscape 4 users can move folders from one location to another simply using a 'drag and drop'.

3. Netscape/mail crashes on MAC

There are four things to try:
