PC Hardware for NICE and Linux Services

  David Foster IT/DIS

Recent years have seen an increasing load put on the central PC hardware support as the number of machines sold within the organisation has grown. The PC Shop over the years has been involved in tracking the rapid evolution of the technology and liaising with the support service responsible for the software distribution which has traditionally been NICE.

This year has seen an evolution of the central services in a number of respects. The rate of change of hardware innovations from our suppliers, Vobis and Elonex has continued to increase which has increased the number of hardware combinations in use on the CERN site. Linux has been recognised as an important alternative to Windows for certain types of use at CERN and since this runs on ordinary Intel PC’s it has become a factor in recommending machine configurations.

In July this year, it was decided that the PC activity had grown to such an extent that it was important to split the PC Shop into two new sections within IT/DIS group to deal with the two broad user requirements:

New Web pages accessible through http://pcwww.cern.ch will direct the user to the appropriate service for his or her needs. For the standard machines there is now very little choice as the specific configurations proposed are the ones which have been tested and are supported. All ordering of the standard machines should be performed through these Web pages.

Local divisional representatives handle the majority of issues concerning desktop PCs and provide the interface to the central support. A list of representatives is given below and you should contact them for advice and support as needed.
