Some UNIX "Tips"

Nicole Crémel and Roger Woolnough IT/User Support

Question   -   Compare files on UNIX
How can I compare (or see differences between) 2 files on UNIX ?

Answer   -   You can use the command "diff" or the more sophisticated graphics command "tkdiff". Type "man diff" or "man tkdiff" for more information.

Question   -   HEPiX X11 files
Where can I find a description of all the files used by the HEPiX X11 environment ?

Answer   -   In the "HEPiX X11 Scripts - Files" Web page, at URL: http://wwwinfo.cern.ch/hepix/wg/scripts/www/X11/files.html

Question   -   Queues in RSPLUS and "rsbatch"
What is the difference between the different queues for batch processing on RSPLUS (e.g. 1nd, e_1nd , sa_1nd, etc.)?

Answer   -   The "unadorned" queues are the "public" queues and the batch work runs on "rsbatch" nodes. The "e_" queues are the engineering queues (which also existed on the SP2). Jobs run in these queues run on PaRC nodes. The "sa_" queues are restricted to members of the SA group and jobs submitted to these queues run on dedicated batch systems (N.B. they are now obsolete and will soon disappear.)

The command "bqueues -l" gives you a description of each queue. Also "bclusters" shows that "1nd" is an "rsbatch" queue and "e_1nd" a parc queue: they are dispatched to different clusters.
