"Internet Applications": A New Group in IT Division (IT/IA)

  John Gamble IT/IA (group leader)

On the first of February this year a new group called "Internet Applications" was created in IT division. The group is a fusion of three existing units, the LCB video-conferencing project from CS group, the e-mail support section from DIS group and the Web Office group.

The group was given as its mandate "to provide services, tools and methods for information sharing and collaborative work over Internet-type networks". This includes gathering requirements, evaluation of products and options, and the implementation of services.

In practical terms the new group is responsible for the central e-mail services including listbox, the "Web server" service to address the community needs for Web publications and Web based applications (www.cern.ch and the many aliases), the video-conferencing and associated video recording/playback project, and support for Internet news. It is also responsible for the recommended set of applications for interacting with these services, the browsers and other collaborative applications of common interest to the community, including future projects such as calendaring.

Please contact me (John.Gamble@cern.ch, 73105) if you have concerns in these areas and feel that we can or should be doing more, or that we should be doing that better.
