CERN CRICKET CLUB Notes taken during the Annual General Meeting held on 10th November 1994 in Restaurant No.1, for approval at the next Annual General Meeting in 1995. Present : D.Allen , C.Bee , C.Carter , A.Cash , M.Davenport , C.Onions , J.Ostler , B.Pattison , M.Sale , followed later by S.Hancock ,R.Khan . Apologies : C.Dean , R.Hillier , A.Kirk , D.McNamara , E.Schyns . The meeting was formally opened by the (Life) President at 5:45 pm and the agenda adopted as proposed. The Minutes of the Annual General Meeting of November 1993 were accepted as taken. There were no matters arising from the Minutes. Captain s Report Results of the matches were : Won 7, Drawn 1, Tied 0, Lost 8, Abandoned 0, Postponed 0, Cancelled 1, Forfeited 1. This was the first time CERN had to forego a match, due most likely to the fact that their lowest ever total (14 all out) was realised against the team they were due to play. This was compounded by the memory of suffering their second heaviest defeat (by 205 runs) the week before. In contrast to this, CERN went to the other extreme in achieving their highest ever total (261-7 off 30 overs), thus improving by just 3 runs on their previous highest total of 258-7 off 30 overs. Fortunately there were more good records than bad, noteably B.Pattison who finished the season with 20 wickets at an average of 3.5, though it was noted by the Captain that he had craftily avoided the tough fixtures. The President reminded the Captain that he did finish ahead of him in the batting aswell, to which the reply was that this was no feat as nearly everybody did! Another noteable achievement was that of two CERN batsmen (C.Dean & D.McNamara) for the first time ever, scoring centuries in the same match, thus ensuring a dramatic end to the season. A team from Switzerland calling themselves the Alpenhorns (in which three CERN players appeared), went to Birmingham to participate in the Golden Oldies tournament for over forties. They performed honourably by winning all three of their matches and now look forward to the next such event to be held in Sydney in January 1996. The single wicket competition this year was won by the youngest member of the club (R.Onions) - a remarkable achievement, after having been won by the two eldest members on the two previous occasions. The Captain informed everyone about the availability of CERN Cricket Club information on the World Wide Web, including pictures, at which point two or three members were anxious to know which pictures and if certain ones taken in Porlezza were included , that they were sufficiently censored! Treasurer s Report As Chris Bee handed out copies of the Accounts for the year, A.Cash soon realised he shouldn t have come, as he found he had to dig deepest of the three outstanding debtors. The balance stands at 1564.20 Frs with 2511.40 Frs having been spent this year on a new mat (which we have yet to see!). The collection of subscriptions was apparently better this year and thanks to a subsidy from the Staff Association of a similar amount, the balance looks healthier than it would otherwise have looked. The raising of the subscription from 40 to 50 Frs was discussed, the outcome of which was eventually left up to the new committee to decide. The donation of a parasol by D.Oakes to keep beers cool amongst other things, was most appreciated (the club paying just 50 Frs for an item worth considerably more). It was noted that no fund raising event really took place this year. Two members then suggested they had something in mind for a future get-together, possibly in the New Year. Groundsman s Report Colin Carter announced the acquisition of a new mower which could hopefully be started and operated by anyone! The old one required such technique and resilience that only the most hardened of gardeners got anywhere near the wicket with it. Thanks to the President s connections, the Club is now the proud owner of a new hut. It could possibly be used for changing, scoring and storing drinks, with the idea of keeping the old one for storing all kit and equipment. The Groundsman proposed the drilling of new holes for the transfer of one of the mat-holding brackets to a place further along on the concrete blocks, thus lining the mat up with a new practice strip. This would of course imply making more holes in the ground for errection of the nets accordingly. He also suggested having some kind of clearance into the wooded area to create two entry/exit points and therefore facilitate the retrieval of balls. Kit Report This was presented by Adam Cash in the absence of the Vice-captain. Some kit was purchased this year in Birmingham, during the Golden Oldies tournament in which three members of the club participated. This included a couple of bats, a couple of pairs of gloves and three pairs of pads. A full inventory was provided by E.Schyns in which there were found to be several prictice balls (careful how you say that!). B.Williams was concerned that aswell as 18 boxes there was also a first aid box! (perhaps for M.Sale after being caught without one). Still more bats and of course balls (normal ones) are apparently required, and R.Khan offered to look into the possibility of acquiring two bats on his next trip to India/Pakistan. As for the new mat which is already paid for, difficulties have been encountered in getting it (and that of Bern CC) transported from Manchester to Geneva by air. Officers Election As usual, there had been no candidacies received for any of the posts. At least this year there was some relief in that the Presidency did not have to be discussed, so straight on to the post of Captain for which Chris Onions was re-elected unanimously. Having absolutely no recollection whatsoever of how the voting went if indeed there was any, the author assumes he is to continue with the post of Secretary (for fixtures only). Emile Schyns (not present) stated in writing that he would have even less time next season than this, to donate to the job of Vice-Captain. In consideration of this therefore, Adam Cash was proposed by Chris Onions, seconded by Martyn Davenport and so voted in unopposed. Mike Sale felt that replenishment of the fridge was probably enough work without the added burden of the Treasury. So with this in mind, Jon Ostler was proposed by Chris Bee, seconded by Mike Sale and voted in unopposed. For the post of Groundsman, Colin Carter was re-elected unanimously and offers to help him out came from Chris Dean and Martyn Davenport. The idea of having a coach present at net practices was brought up by Dave Allen, and in his absence Jon Cook was chosen as the right man for the job. Emile Schyns was proposed as Social Secretary by Jon Ostler and seconded by Adam Cash so was therefore re-elected. Concerning team teas, Martyn Davenport suggested that Emile take out the ladies sometime, in order to discuss better arrangements for the organisation of teas for the season - allocation of weekends, sharing of workload etc. A vote of thanks was offered by Mike Sale on behalf of the Club, to the ladies who continue to provide excellent teas. SCA Affairs & Fixtures for 1995 The Club expressed unanimous support of the President s proposal in his capacity as SCA Secretary, concerning what was supposed to be the League Final at Bout-du-Monde. Due to strong objections to the eligibility of Alpine CC by Nomads CC, he proposed that a match would nevertheless take place in Geneva on 11th September 1994 between Alpine CC and Bern CC but no trophy would be awarded on conclusion. A new away fixture is on the cards against Monte Carlo CC in May 1995, following their visit to CERN in May 1993. Also, CERN CC hope to field a side for the European Club Cricket Festival to be held in Durham. This is a follow-up to the event held in July 1992 in which a CERN CC/Geneva CC side had an enjoyable week in and around Durham, even managing to pull off two wins out of six matches played. So, there being no other business to discuss, the meeting was brought to a close at 8:05 pm.
