On a beautiful sunny Saturday, 13 players turned out for the annual Eifion Jones Single Wicket competition. In all rounds, apart from the final, each player bowls two overs against his opponent. Each time the batsman is dismissed, he loses six runs. Senior players have a bonus run for each year over 50, whereas young players have one run for every year under 18. In the first round there were several surprises. Last year's winner, Colin Carter, was eliminated, young Richard Onions (aged 14) beat his father and Bruce King lost to Richard Scrivens. Jonathan Cook, Andy Kirk, Richard Onions and Derek Oakes progressed to the semi-finals. Cook was the hot favourite to win the competition, but a good bowling performance by Kirk, taking his opponent's wicket twice with consecutive balls, saw him through to the final. In the other semi-final, Onions was dismissed with the first ball he faced but recovered well with a six and a four to reach a total of 11. Oakes was unable to score anything other than singles and lost his wicket once, ending up with 3. The final therefore was played between Kirk and Onions. Kirk, batting first, struck the first ball for six but Onions recovered by bowling him off the fourth ball. In the second over, Kirk was caught and bowled but responded with a six off the next ball. In his third and last over, Onions bowled Kirk twice and off the last ball the batsman was run out, leaving him with a total of -6. In order to win, Onions had to make sure he did not lose his wicket more than once and a resolute defensive innings saw him to victory by eleven runs. So the trophy, which had been won in the previous years by the two oldest players, went this time to the youngest. Well played Richard!
