CERN CRICKET CLUB Notes taken during the annual General Meeting held on 10th November 1996 in Restaurant No.1, for approval at the next Annual General Meeting in 1997. Present: D.Allen, C.Carter, M.Davenport, J.Evans, C.Onions, J.Ostler, B.Pattison, M.Sale,W.Salter, followed by J.Pym (late), C.Dean (v.late) & E.Schyns (v.v.late). Apologies: N.Chohan, J.Cook, T.Goodyear, V.Ramakrishnan. The meeting was formally opened by the (Life) President at 5:40 pm and the agenda adopted as proposed. The Minutes of the Annual General Meeting of November 1995 were accepted as taken. Concerning matters arising from the Minutes, the President noted that extra mat supports had not been installed, nor had the pigeon holes been removed from the hut containing the kit. C.Carter said he had not heard anything and nothing had been passed on to B.Williams either (both of whom could not attend the 1995 Meeting). Captain’s Report Results of the matches were : Won 6, Drawn 0, Tied 0, Lost 9, Abandoned 0, Postponed 2, Cancelled 4, Forfeited 2. This had to be one of the worst seasons in one way or another. The results were not necessarily poor except for CERN not managing a single win in the league! More importantly though, six matches had to be called off due to bad weather or team raising difficulties. There was an enjoyable trip to Barcelona where CERN recorded their highest ever total (264-7 off 40 overs) against Perpignan, thus improving by just 3 runs on their previous highest total of 261-7 off 30 overs. In contrast, the trip to Monte Carlo was a disappointment with no cricket being played due to a dubious decision one day and a downpour the next. The Cossonay Festival had been a tough weekend with the equivalent of five 20-over matches played in two days. CERN performed honourably, finishing 4th out of the six teams participating. In what ended up as being the last match of the season, CERN finished on a high note. They trounced Geneva by 8 wickets, chasing a total of over 200 runs, to win back the John Harvey Trophy. A new column has been added to the bowling statistics, that of runs per over, to give the Captain something to come top in! Treasurer’s Report Jon Ostler presented a proffesional report of the Club’s financial position and stated that we were up on last year. The balance stands at 2879.00 Frs with 1055.75 Frs having Sep 97 - DA been spent on equipment (bats & balls). He suggested that we should further increase the subscriptions by 10 Frs from 50 Frs to 60 Frs. This would be implemented by the newly elected committee if it so wished. Groundsman’s Report Colin Carter pronounced the pitch to be no better, but no worse and that mowing was much easier now since the acquisition of a “new” mower. He urges us to find another method of rolling the wicket so as to avoid pushing the current heavy roller which requires almost a full team to operate. He suggests perhaps the hiring of a motor roller could be looked into or else the laying of a concrete wicket (an annual topic) would solve the problem. Kit Report There was no Vice-captain really throughout most of the season, due to the departure early in the season of Adam Cash, the elected Vice-captain. A kit report was therefore not made as such but a full inventory was provided by and is available from Dave Allen. It was decided we could do with 2 helmets (now that Bruce King, who posessed the only one, would be leaving us), 1 pair of left-handed gloves and the usual 18 new cricket balls. Election of Officers As usual, there had been no candidacies received for any of the posts. The President having been elected once and for all in 1993, it was straight on to the post of Secretary. Dave Allen was proposed by Mike Sale and seconded by Martyn Davenport so was therefore re-elected. There was considerable discussion following Chris Onions’ decision to step down after many years at the helm, mainly due to the time consuming task of raising a team and sometimes two teams each week. Eventually, Wayne Salter agreed to take on the job of Captain after being proposed by Chris Onions and seconded by Dave Allen. For the post of Vice-captain, Chris Onions was proposed by Dave Allen and seconded by Mike Sale and so voted in unopposed. With the imminent departure of Jon Ostler, a new Treasurer was sought. Martyn Davenport was proposed by Chris Onions and seconded by John Evans and therefore elected to the post. Colin Carter was duly re-elected as Groundsman, having been proposed by Chris Onions and seconded by Mike Sale. An offer to help him out came from Chris Dean who Sep 97 - DA would act as Assistant groundsman. Joan Bell was re-elected unanimously as Social Affairs Co-ordinator and Mike Sale offered thanks on behalf of the club for her much appreciated good work. For liquid replenishment, Mike Sale was proposed by Chris Onions and seconded by Emile Schyns and so re-elected for this last but not least important post. SCA Affairs & Fixtures for 1997 The format for the Swiss League has yet to be decided but the Club agreed it would be in favour of a return to two divisions, split geographically. The one league system with all clubs playing each other was found to be too difficult to fulfil, with the additional matches that entailed along with the extra travelling. There will be a team comprising players from CERN and Geneva travelling to England to participate in the Durham Festival as in July 1992 and July 1995. Aswell as the traditional trip to Porlezza to play Milan it was agreed a return to Spain to play Barcelona & Perpignan would be welcome and to go for another weekend of split fixtures with Monte Carlo & Cabris, who we are yet to play. Any Other Business There was mention of a revival of the close season CCC (CERN Curry Club) whereby those members daring enough partake in a Vindaloo tour of the Indian restaurants in Geneva and the Pays de Gex, taking in a different one every fortnight or so. The question of sponsorship (another annual topic) was briefly touched on. So, there being no further business to discuss, the meeting was brought to a close at 8:10 pm.
