The Eifion Jones Single Wicket Competition (29 August 1998) Twenty-one men and six ladies entered this years competition, the largest number ever. This is a knock-out competition, and each player faces 2 overs from his/her opponent, the winner progressing to the next round. Runs are scored in the usual way, but each time a batsman is out 6 runs are deducted! The large number of entries necessitated an early start and a rapid change round after each couple of overs. Nonetheless the final was played in gloom at about 8 p.m. Some winning margins were large, others quite small, and an exhausting days cricket was followed by a barbecue. The Ladies plate was presented to Joan Bell and Tina Osborne to be shared, and Dave Allen beat Chris Dean in a very closely contested final. Congratulations to all concerned and thanks to everybody who took part in the game and/or helped organize the barbecue.
