CERN CRICKET CLUB Notes taken during the Annual General Meeting held on 16th November 2000 in Restaurant No.1, for approval at the next Annual General Meeting in 2001. Present: S.Akhtar, D.Allen, C.Carter, R.Fielder, C.Onions, J.Osborne, B.Pattison, M.Sale, W.Salter, I.Turnbull, E.Schyns (v.v. late). Apologies: R.Campbell, T.Goodyear, V.Ramakrishnan, V.Rastogi, J.Roberts, P.van Essche. The meeting was formally opened by the (Life) President at 5:46 pm and the agenda adopted as proposed. The Minutes of the Annual General Meeting of November 1999 were accepted as taken. Captain's Report John Osborne presented the report, stating that there had been a big improvement on last year. CERN won more matches than they lost and came third in the Western League (instead of the usual 4th). There were two victories against Cossonay (home & away) and two victories against Cabris (both away). Two club records also fell during the season; Wayne Salter made the highest individual score of 153 not out & CERN amassed a total of 311 for the loss of just 3 wickets, for the highest team total and this, in a league match. At the Lodi Festival, CERN finished an admirable 3rd again, having won two out of their three matches, including a very narrow loss. Full results for the season were: Won 8, Drawn 0, Tied 0, Lost 6, Abandoned 0, Postponed 0, Cancelled 4, Forfeited 0. Treasurer's Report Rob Fielder presented his report, showing a healthy balance of 8000 Frs. The amount collected for subscriptions just about outweighed the Club's heaviest expense of 685 Frs for the Lodi Festival. Many subscriptions however had not been paid and it was hoped that those still owing would be responsible enough to pay their dues, especially at a time when a great effort was required in order to fund the new pitch. It was agreed that something really had to be done about the collecting of annual subscriptions & match fees and in establishing a point at which a person becomes billable. April 2001 - DA Wayne Salter brought up the issue of insurance and wondered whether CERN players were fully covered by the Club's insurance policy when playing at other grounds. This led to other aspects such as traffic incidents at the home car park and balls (or bats in certain cases!) hitting parked cars. Groundsman's Report Colin Carter began by stating that the cricket field was in pretty poor condition. There were more weeds, more molehills, more mouseholes, deep tracks made by a tractor and less rolling of the wicket was carried out. He advised rolling of the outfield for next season (Bryan Pattison would get in contact with the gardeners). Colin suggested having some kind of access to the woods to facilitate the retrieval of balls dispatched to the boundary (as Colin can't get his leg over anymore, joked Chris). Also some cutting back of the overhanging branches where the field meets the woods. The nets had been mysteriously wrecked on several occasions, most likely during cutting of the outfield. Bryan thanked Colin for his diligent mowing of the grass, for both the match strip and the practice strip. Kit Report Iain Turnbull produced an inventory of the entire contents of the cricket hut. Notably, there were no less than 20 boxes of various sizes! There were no match balls left and there were 7 bats of W.C.Grace era! Four new Gunn & Moore cricket bats had been purchased, already knocked in. Two huts had been transported to the ground but were in need of extensive repair. A new score- book will soon be required as just 10 matches remain in the old one. Iain requested thigh pads & arm guards in anticipation of a livelier wicket being laid for next season . . . New pitch . . . as for the new pitch, it was decided to opt for an artificial grass mat of 2 yards width over one of 3 yards width. The excavation work had been carried out, awaiting gravel to be laid. The bitchumen finish would now have to wait until the plant responsible re-opens sometime in March, followed by laying of the artificial grass mat in April. After repairs to the ground due to the inevitable damage by machinery, seeding would then be necessary. April 2001 - DA Election of Officers To save lots of time (or to recuperate the time lost whilst certain members of the Club made the most of free Boddingtons which was flowing dangerously close to the Meeting!), a status quo for all appointments was hoped for . . . and obtained. Therefore, D. Allen for Secretary, J.Osborne for Captain, I.Turnbull for Vice-captain, R.Fielder for Treasurer & C.Carter for Groundsman. B.Pattison reminded the Meeting that he would be retiring from CERN at the end of February 2001 and that the Club should begin looking for the next President if it so wished. SCA Affairs & Fixtures for 2001 The Swiss Cricket Association is to become more involved in European cricket for which the body is known as the European Cricket Council (ECC), previously the European Cricket Federation (ECF). After travelling to St.Vallier last season to play Cabris CC for the first time in a full game (competed at 8-a-side in Lodi), CERN will be invit- ing them to Prevessin this season. That ties in well with another weekend fixture (played annually at alternate grounds), where CERN is due to travel to Ispra to play Euratom CC. The traditional trip to Porlezza to play Milan CC is planned as usual and it is hoped that they will return to CERN after their 4-year absence. Any other business Emile Schyns reminded everyone that if somebody finds they cannot fulfil their match managing duties then it was their responsibility to find a replacement. Chris Onions added that ideally, the Match Manager should be present on match day. The meeting was formally brought to a close at 7:46 pm.
