Field Quality Working Group |
Monitor the magnet field quality versus requirements: transfer function, field
harmonics, dynamic behaviour (snap-back, dB/dt), for all super-conducting and
warm magnets, including the experimental magnets.
Investigate the solutions required to minimize the consequences if a magnet is
partially out of spec.: sorting, correction strategy, proposals for
modification of the manufacturing, use of the safety margin and make
recommendations to MEB.
Review the criteria for distribution of components (Sc cables, correctors
types, etc.) and advise the group in charge for the optimal distribution for
the FQ and for Installation scenario.
Evaluate the impact of the geometrical imperfections and of misalignment on the
field quality. Define prescriptions in collaboration with the WGA.
Monitor the statistical evolution (trends) of the field quality and alignment
measured, evaluate consequences and propose relevant preventive actions. Make
recommendations as to the choice of the reference magnets.
Make recommendations on the measurement strategy to fulfill the requirements.
Ensure that the proper tools are available for a fast and efficient judgment of
the field quality: measured field imperfection database, optics database,
communication between both, models,...
Review critically and periodically the beam dynamics acceptance criteria and
thresholds for field harmonics and alignment (dynamic aperture, diffusion in
amplitude and tune, frequency maps, scaling laws...).
Provide assistance to Groups in charge of magnet design and procurement for FQ
definition and steering. Provide advise and guidelines to Magnet Groups for
acceptance (or non acceptance) of marginal magnets.
Ensure that all the information is available in appropriate form to facilitate
the commissioning.
Report to: MEB, LTC and MARIC
The working group will invite other persons whenever needed and adjust the
membership in the light of experience.
President: J-P. Koutchouk
Scientific secretary: E. Todesco
Advisors: R. Wolf, L. Walckiers and W. Scandale will be invited at milestones
as advisors
We acknowledge M. Catin for helping us to distribute information managed by the working group. The present working group continues the work of the FQWG chaired by
L. Walckiers active in 1998-2000
(see web site).
