CHECK LIST FOR NA48 BEAM LINES

C. Biino, N. Doble, L. Gatignon, P. Grafström / SL-EA

The NA48 beam consists of two distinct parts:

  1. The P42 beam : the proton transport from the primary target T4 to the KL target T10.
  2. The K12 beam : the Ko part of the beam, including the proton transport from T10 to the KS target.
The P42 beam is controlled from the small B&W beam terminal : RUN <231>TREE ,
the K12 beam from the larger colour terminal : RUN <225>TREE .

The checks below should be performed at least twice per shift and in any case after each access or change of condition or in case of beam problems.

  1. Find out which beam mode has been selected:
             K12 beam : SET-UP / MODE

  2. Magnet and collimator status of both P42 and K12 beams
                           STATUS / MAGS
                           STATUS / COLLS

Print the result and glue it in the logbook at the beginning of each shift (in the K12 beam, Bends 8 and 9 refer to the 2 coils of the spectrometer magnet MNP33).
A fast check can be made by typing
                           STATUS / CHECK

which shows all the out-of-tolerance settings in the graphics window ("DICO").

  3. Check the TAX positions
             For P42 : TUNE / SPECIAL / TAX

These control the relative proton flux to the KL target and are closed (position +143 mm) for access and in case of interlock alarms - see list on screen. If an interlock occurs, ask CRN to repair and reset before you can re-open TAX(7).
Unless there is an access, it is important to check that the P0 MAGNETS survey (source #6) is enabled.
             For K12 : SETUP / TAX / K12

Write the settings for both P42 and K12 in the logbook.
  4. Check and print the status of the K12 vacuum via
                           STATUS / VACUUM

It is important to see that the two VACUUM VALVES (isolating the LKr calorimeter) are OPEN.

  5. Look at the K12 beam profiles at the beam wire chamber at the end of the hall:
                           TUNE / MEAS / MWPC / PROFILE / 1 (or 2) / DICO

Print the profile (in the DICO window - choose "Print logbook inv" in the pop-up menu and click in the DICO window to produce and print a snapshot). Compare with previous profiles.
Note : Often the first profile is no good. Repeat if necessary.

  6. Look at the scaler rates in the K12 beam:
                           TUNE / SPECIAL / SCALERS

Print the output and glue it in the book. Compare with previous counting rates for the same beam mode.

See the P42+K12 User Guide or the Beam Handbook in the control room if you need more information.
