A large lead-glass spectrometer being assembled at CERN for an experiment on the CP violating decay of the long-lived neutral kaon into two neutral pions being carried out by the Aachen, CERN, Torino group. Nearly half of the lead-glass crystals can be seen in the lower part of the photograph already installed. Incident electrons and gamma rays would dissipate their energy in the crystals and the resulting light would be captured by photomultipliers (not installed at the time the photograph was taken). The important feature of the assembly is its excellent energy resolution of 1.5 %.
