As summer draws to a close, we look forward to the upcoming events at CERN and the surrounding area. Here are just a few of the events in store.
Friday, 25 September: CERN Photowalk
CERN is teaming up with several physics laboratories for an international photography competition: The Global Physics Photowalk. This Friday, selected photographers will be given the unique opportunity to explore the facilities of the world’s largest particle physics laboratory. The best photos will be chosen by a local jury and exhibited in 2016. Each laboratory will also choose three photos to be entered for the international competition, which will run until the end of the year. In this case, the winning photos will be selected by a jury and a public vote. They will be exhibited and also featured in the CERN Courier and Symmetry.

Friday, 25 September: Researchers’ Night/POP Science
CERN will be celebrating the 10th annual European Researchers’ night, an event celebrated in more than 300 cities in Europe. CERN, in collaboration with various partners, has organised the POP Science project that will take place at a shopping centre on the outskirts of Geneva. The programme is a unique blend of science, cinema, comics, poetry, music, games and encounters with artists and scientists. The main goal of the event is to bring together the general public and the exciting world of research and to show that science is fun and accessible to everyone.

Friday - Sunday, 2-4 October: THE Port Hackathon
THE Port Hackathon is a project designed to combine creative minds from CERN and non-profit organisations in interdisciplinary teams to work on humanitarian technology related benefits to society. The topics selected for the 2015 edition are inspired by the Red Cross, United Nations and many other NGOs in and around Geneva. Six inter-disciplinary teams with about 10 members each had 6 weeks of preparation with video-conference meetings and a 60 hour final hackathon to build working prototypes and tangible solutions for real life humanitarian problems.

Friday, 9 October: TEDxCERN
With the theme ‘Breaking the rules,’ TEDxCERN 2015 brings you ideas that challenge the norm with solutions that could transform lives. From using tangible interfaces that allow human interaction via e-devices, 3D technology as a means to revolutionize education and product fabrication, to exploring transformations of matter into habitable structures, TEDxCERN’s speakers this year bring you their visions for a new world. These ideas push beyond the boundaries of academia to inform our present and change our future.
