Parton Distributions in the Lightest Nuclei

The studies of nuclear effects in structure functions performed until now, did not include nuclear targets with A < 4. Therefore one had to deal with the evolution of the typical oscillation of the ratio F2A/ F2D as a function of x from A = 4 until A = 200 and not with the origin of the oscillation itself. The oscillation obviously sets on already for the lightest nuclei, like 3He, and remains 'frozen' for heavier nuclei because of the saturation of short range nuclear forces. This has been demonstrated in Refs. (1-3), (5). The analysis of the position of the three cross-over points in which F2A/ F2D = 1 shows, that they are A-independent if A > 3:

       1st: x = 0.0615 ± 0.0024

       2nd: x = 0.278 ± 0.008

       3d : x = 0.84 ± 0.01

The Letter of Intent, which will suggest measurements of the distortion of parton distributions in 3-nucleon systems is being discussed these days. The motivation is based on the calculations of the evolution of the EMC effect in light nuclei, performed recently by V.Burov, A.Molochkov and G.Smirnov.
