First shots with the CO2 Master Oscillator at CERN

Below is an animation of shots from the new CO2 Master Oscillator made by ILP, Russia, and delivered to CERN in April 1997.

The first shots show the first good operation of the laser on 21st April 1997. The upper dotted line gives the average peak amplitude for the shots. The timebase is 50ns/div. The curve trace has been smoothed so the equivalent detector response time is more than 1ns.

The second series of shots taken on 7th May 1997 show three different modes of operation. The first is "Single Mode" as before with the best response time available. The second is when the cavity length has been adjusted to give two-mode operation. The third mode is with the Low Pressure Tube (LPT) off, showing the typical "self-locking" multi-mode operation, similar to the current Lumonics laser operation. The timebase is again 50ns/div.
