Access requirements

The Experimental Hall North Area (EHNA1) or shorter HNA (Map: EHN1), known colloquially as the "North Area" is a controlled-access area. Anyone taking shifts etc. there will require appropriate accesses to the hall and the control rooms. The first access required is to the experimental hall itself. This is "CERN PRIV", which requires a personal dosimeter as well as safety shoes and a hard hat.

If you already have a valid CERN personal dosimeter you can enter HNA with it. Otherwise, you need to request a temporary dosimeter at the Dosimetry Service, B. 55 R- 004 (opening hours 8:30-12:00, phone number 72155, email: dosimetry.service@cernSPAMNOTNOSPAMPLEASE.ch). For safety
shoes and safety hat, you can buy one on the CERN store through edh: for example SCEM for the hat: 92.23.01.001.6 and for the shoes: 50.43.10.B You must go to try the shoes at the shoe STORE in B. 73: opening hours 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m
The H2 control rooms also require a special access. This is obtained through EDH at:

You should request access to B887-1-B71 and B887-1-B81. Please allow a couple of days for the accesses to be granted.

Beam-spill signals

Three NIM-level signals related to the SPS spill are available in the control room and transmitted down to the experimental zone. They have different names upon entry into the control room and exit from it (and in the experimental area), as follows:

Moving tables

Two moving tables are available in the H2 area. The first is xxx tonnes and rotates in eta/phi. It presently holds an HCAL barrel wedge and is
generally used for CMS combined-calorimetry tests.

The second table is downstream of the first. It is a rectangular "scissor table", measuring ~3m (along with the beam direction - Z) x 2m (transverse to the beam - X), and has a capacity of 10 tonnes. It can move in X and Y directions, controllable from a rack outside of the experimental zone. As of October 2015, the readout of the Y position is via a digital readout whilst the X direction is via a webcam.

Support equipment in the experimental area

The area contains many things that are useful, such as aluminium tables upon which to locate prototypes, absorbers of various types (steel, lead), power cables, 3-phase connection points, full-size racks etc.

Zone(s)

The first CERN tests will be located in the H2 beam area in EHNA1 (Experimental Hall North Area), upstream of the 3T superconducting magnHGCAL & Beam area contact person:et. The large rotating table will most likely be used to accommodate the HGCAL prototype. The beamline here is a tertiary beam from the SPS.

Access

You will use H2 secondary beam line, door 172.

Safety

You don't need hard hats and safety shoes for shift work or when you
just run onto the area to push a button; you do need them for
installation work when heavy objects are moved around. There is half a
dozen of hard hats and 3-4 pairs of safety shoes donated to H2 by CMS
Technical Coordination and by absent-minded participants of previous
test beams. Note that you have to wear closed shoes in the building,
not flip-flops or sandals.

Correction: WE signal arrives one millisecond before the beam extraction

Addendum: big eta-phi table is rated for 120t, we have only ~100 t
installed at the moment.

Warning: getting multiple test beam periods in a year is not easy, we
may have to combine those runs with other users. I would expect the
call for beam time requests in ~4-6 weeks.
