L&B Support for Virtual Appliances
This is a page for an emerging activity.
Motivation
Virtual appliance instances are dynamic entities with a life cycle of their own. Running in a virtualized environment, they are actually quite similar to regular grid jobs. That is why we propose to use Logging and Bookkeeping - a process monitoring service currently used primarily to monitor computing jobs - to monitor virtual appliances. The foreseen solution involves event messages generated by the virtual appliances on important points in their life time (boot, suspend, shutdown), and a state machine implementation in the L&B server to process the events correctly. Owners could then benefit from L&B features such as the querying interface, event log and messaging-enabled notification capabilities. This task would result in server-side support and a client that would be simple to integrate into any appliance and allow it to be monitored through L&B.
Tasks
- Server-side design (jfilipo)
- Client-side design (TBD)
- Client-side integration (valtri)
