Acronyms and Proper names used at INSPIRE, explained

This is a not complete list of words used during CDS Meetings that a newcomer may want to understand:
  • ADS: Astrophysics Data System, a Digital Library portal for researchers in Astronomy and Physics
  • AFS: Distributed Filesystem used at CERN visible on any LXPlus node and by the INSPIRE servers.
  • Ajax: Asynchronous JavaScript and XML
  • Alice: The Alice experiment
  • APPP: Author Publication Profile Page (e.g. http://inspirehep.net/author/J.R.Ellis.1/)
  • arXiv: The main preprint server used by physicists, hosting many of the documents that INSPIRE aggregates.
  • ATLAS: the ATLAS Experiment
  • BFE: BibFormat Element
  • Budget code: a metonimia for money reserve
  • CDB: Language and repository currently used to maintain the profiles for INSPIRE clusters
  • CDS: CERN Document Server
  • CHEP: Computing in High Energy and Nuclear Physics conference
  • CLI: Command Line Interface
  • CMS: Compact Muon Solenoid (one of the experiments at CERN)
  • CSC: CERN School of Computing
  • CSS: Cascading Stylesheets
  • DC: Dublin Core metadata format (a very simple and well known way to describe documents)
  • DESY: Deutsches Elektronensynchrotron at Hamburg, Germany
  • DFS: Windows Distributed Filesystem used at CERN
  • DG: Directeur Général (currently Rolf-Dieter Heuer)
  • EDH: Electronic Document Handling System where all the bureaucracy is managed at CERN
  • EDMS: CERN Engineering and Data Management Service (another system like CERN Document Server but not based on Invenio)
  • EPFL: Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne
  • ETHZ: Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich
  • Fermilab:
  • FireRole: Firewall Like Role Definition language used within the WebAccess framework
  • FFT: Fulltext File Transfer Invenio proprietary MARC tag used to upload files.
  • GL: In CERN parlance 'group leader' who manages resources for a group (Jens for GS-SIS)
  • Grey Book: lists of experiments, institutes and people participating in experiments at CERN
  • GS: The department where the SIS group is located, and which pays salaries
  • HP: Hewlett-Packard Development Company, our new servers brand
  • HR: Human Resources Department at CERN
  • HW: Hardware
  • IE: Microsoft Internet Explorer
  • ILL: Interlibrary Loan
  • INFN: Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare
  • INSPIRE: well...
  • IP: Internet Protocol address
  • IT: Information Technology Department at CERN
  • LEP: Large Electron-Positron (Main project at CERN before LHC)
  • LHC: Large Hadron Collider (Main project at CERN)

  • RM: Real Media file
  • RSS: Really Simple Syndication
  • SBI: ...
  • SIPB: Scientific Information Policy Board, which oversees SIS group and therefore also INSPIRE activities
  • SIS: Scientific Information Service, the group in the GS department where most of the INSPIRE resources at CERN are located
  • SL: In CERN parlance a "section leader", who manages resources for a section (Salvatore for GS-SIS-OA, Tibor for IT-CIS-DLT)
  • SLAC: Stanford Linear Accelerator Center
  • SLC(3,4,5): Scientific Linux CERN, CERN customized Linux Distribution
  • SLS: Service Level Status web service
  • SMAC: ...
  • SMTP: Simple Mail Transfer Protocol
  • SPIRES: The thing which was there before INSPIRE
  • SPSC: ...
  • SSO: Single Sign-On, central authentication system used at CERN
  • SUN: Sun Microsystems, our old servers brand
