Domain Names

Proposals for domain names. Feel free to add your own - just add ideas, don't put negative comments unless they are on your own ideas. We'll narrow down and vote later, this is just a space for jotting down ideas:

spires.org - brand recognition! taken though, and politically difficult

ESPRIRES

A nonword that incorporates everything spires was with connotations of expression and speed, multinational language elements (and theory department coffee).

plus www.esprires.com isn't taken.

1) If we are going for a standalone domain, what about something very short and content-oriented such as hepdoc.org? It is currently free, but considering that this page is public and anybody can see domain names we are thinking about, chances are that this inspire.org guy will pop up and buy it shortly.

2) Alternatively, we can go for a subdomain of a wider domain such as hypothetical "particle-physics.org" (not existing yet) or "interactions.org" as suggested by Travis. This could also be very useful if we want to go for the brand-oriented name and use the term "inspire" literally inside the domain name. This subdomain idea could then lead to names such as doc.interactions.org (content-oriented) or inspire.interactions.org (brand-oriented). (For comparison, see also "ilcdoc.linearcollider.org".)

Shall we muse about names for both of these scenarios?

I'm actually more interested in doc.interactions.org and/or inspire.interactions.org than in the standalone domain names. I can start to approach the interactions.org people here and see what they think. This would free us to choose our own branding irrespective of name availability. Because we need to transition the trust that users have in SPIRES to the new brand, we need to be able to pick a name that is close enough to get a "halo" effect. The names available on the open market don't seem to have this, but inspire.interactions.org could be enough...on the other hand it might not be enough, and it might just be confusing to folks.

Otherwise, hepdoc is better than anything else we've come up with.

I'm still for hepis (.org). Unfortunately ispire.org and ihep.org are taken.

"hepis.org" is already taken. "hepis.info" seems still available, but I think the name would look rather cryptic when compared to say "hepdoc.org" or "particle-physics.org".

I like the idea of a stand-alone content suggestive domain. When you get into subdomains you start getting into clunky lengthy addresses. I realize many people simply bookmark, or use auto-complete or some other shortcut, but a stand-alone that is easy to communicate on a chalkboard, or voice over the phone, write on a napkin at a conference and all the other awkward unforseen situations is much easier to tell people. I understand the reasoning for something that is a slight departure from spires for the halo but to me, that is not the highest priority because firstly, there are other ways to accomplish the halo, and more important, the halo transition period is finite, but the lengthy subdomain address is something to be lived with for a long time. I advise being careful about a permanent solution for what seems to me to be a temporary problem. Because of this, I like something such as hepdoc, or maybe hepprint, heprint, hepdb, hepmedia (or instead of "hep," astro-phys or phys-astro -- something to include astrophysics could be used). These are all available with the .org domain including www.astro-physinfo.org. Oh, so is www.astro-phys.info. The idea here of course is to pair the fields of interest with some concept of what we do (media, database, info, paper, doc). My problem with "paper" and "doc" is that Spires is beyond that and into jobs, videos, i.e. non-print media and information. Or are we limiting to the hep subfile--not sure about that.

Since we are aspiring to great heights: What about "aspires.com"? Could be bought for 3k$. Or "aspires.info"? Don't know whether it can be bought. "aspire.info" seems to be free.
