Week of 211122

WLCG Operations Call details

  • For remote participation we use Zoom: https://cern.zoom.us/j/99591482961
    • The pass code is provided on the wlcg-operations list.
    • You can contact the wlcg-ops-coord-chairpeople list (at cern.ch) if you do not manage to subscribe.

General Information

  • The purpose of the meeting is:
    • to report significant operational issues (i.e. issues which can or did degrade experiment or site operations) which are ongoing or were resolved after the previous meeting;
    • to announce or schedule interventions at Tier-1 sites;
    • to inform about recent or upcoming changes in the experiment activities or systems having a visible impact on sites;
    • to provide important news about the middleware;
    • to communicate any other information considered interesting for WLCG operations.
  • The meeting should run from 15:00 Geneva time until 15:20, exceptionally to 15:30.
  • The SCOD rota for the next few weeks is at ScodRota
  • Whenever a particular topic needs to be discussed at the operations meeting requiring information from sites or experiments, it is highly recommended to announce it by email to wlcg-scod@cernSPAMNOTNOSPAMPLEASE.ch to allow the SCOD to make sure that the relevant parties have the time to collect the required information, or invite the right people at the meeting.

Best practices for scheduled downtimes

Monday

Attendance:

  • remote: Kate (DB, chair), Maarten (WLCG, ALICE), Claudia (CNAF), Xavier (KIT), Alberto (monitoring), Jose (ATLAS), Borja (monitoring), Pinja (security), Onno (NL-T1), DaveM (FNAL), Christoph (CMS), Andrew (TRIUMF), Mihai P (storage), Steve (storage), Felix (ASGC), Ankur (computing), Darren (RAL), Douglas (BNL), Henryk (LHCb), Pepe (PIC)

Experiments round table:

  • CMS reports ( raw view) -
    • CMS CPU utilization dropped at CERN due to over running of storage quota
      • Being cleared - should be back to normal soon

  • ALICE
    • NTR

Sites / Services round table:

  • ASGC: NTR
  • BNL: Partial shutdown of farm (5 racks) to move to new data center. Move to happen today. US Thanksgiving Thursday 25-Nov, Lab closed 25-Nov, 26-Nov (slower response)
  • CNAF: NTR
  • EGI:
  • FNAL: NTR
  • IN2P3: NTR
  • JINR: NTR
  • KISTI:
  • KIT: Storage downtime tomorrow ( GOCDB:31379).
  • NDGF:
  • NL-T1: NTR
  • NRC-KI:
  • OSG:
  • PIC: Staging and FTS transfer issues are being investigated (NEWS: we stopped the LHCOPN, derived the traffic to the LHCONE and Internet, and the errors disappeared. We are now saturating the LHCONE, and we are in contact with both RedIRIs and Geant. It seems there is something bad at that level, and it's being followed up by experts).
  • RAL: RAL have started a series of daily network interventions to implement network macro segmentation. This will impact ALL Tier-1 services at some point during the intervention period. Although the impact is predicted to be minimal and transient, all services should be considered "At Risk".
  • TRIUMF: Partial network outage on Tues Nov 23 UTC 17:00 - 20:00 GOCDB: https://goc.egi.eu/portal/index.php?Page_Type=Downtime&id=31427

  • CERN computing services: NTR
  • CERN storage services: NTR
  • CERN databases: NTR
  • GGUS:
    • A new release is planned for Wed this week
      • Release notes
      • A downtime has been scheduled from 08:00 to 11:00 UTC
      • Test alarms will be submitted as usual
  • Monitoring:
    • SiteMon final reports for October 2021 sent around
  • Middleware: NTR
  • Networks: NTR
  • Security: NTR
