The application system-config-packages , also available via the menu entry "System Settings"→"Add/Remove Applications" always exits with an unhelpful error message when asked to perform installations:
Error installing packages There was an error installing packages. Exiting. |

This utility is designed to install only packages from the original installation CDs.
We recommend to use yum directly for package management, please see http://linux.web.cern.ch/linux/slc4/docs/softwaremgmt.shtml for details.
When invoked from the command line, the above error is more verbose:The file /media/cdrom/SL/RPMS/whatever-0.1.2-3.i386.rpm cannot be opened. This is due to a missing file, a bad package, or bad media. Press >return< to try again. system-config-packages can actually be made to run by inserting the CD that contains the right package, or by specifying a full path to the SLC installation directory:
# system-config-packages --tree /afs/cern.ch/project/linux/cern/slc4X/i386/The tool will possibly install an old package version, since it does not take into account any updates after release - the nightly yum run hopefully will correct this.
There is no way to get the desired behaviour when the application is invoked from the menu.
