SupportProblem The application system-config-packages, also available via the menu entry "System Settings"→"Add/Remove Applications" always exits with an unhelpful error message when asked to perform installations:
Error installing packages

There was an error installing packages.

Exiting.
SupportAnswer This utility is designed to install only packages from the original installation CDs.

We recommend to use yum directly for package management, please see http://linux.web.cern.ch/linux/slc4/docs/softwaremgmt.shtml for details.

When invoked from the command line, the above error is more verbose:

The file /media/cdrom/SL/RPMS/whatever-0.1.2-3.i386.rpm cannot be opened.
This is due to a missing file, a bad package, or bad media. Press >return< to try again.

system-config-packages can actually be made to run by inserting the CD that contains the right package, or by specifying a full path to the SLC installation directory:

# system-config-packages --tree /afs/cern.ch/project/linux/cern/slc4X/i386/
The tool will possibly install an old package version, since it does not take into account any updates after release - the nightly yum run hopefully will correct this.

There is no way to get the desired behaviour when the application is invoked from the menu.
