Proposed users' page redesign feedback

5 March 2010

In October last year the Communication Group proposed an interim redesign of the users’ web pages in order to improve the visibility of key news items, events and announcements to the CERN community. This proposed redesign was seen as a small step on the way to much wider reforms of the CERN web landscape proposed in the group’s web communication plan.

The results are available below. Some of the key points:

We will take note of the feedback gathered through this process for an upcoming major redesign of the public and users' websites.

Thank you to everyone who replied to the survey.

Question: If there was one thing that you could change about the proposed users' homepage it would be...

This is a report of all of the responses (208) collected for this question.

  1. Don't like the vertical layout
  2. Sorry, but I don't find the new proposal more attractive than the current one. I's as dry and low appealing. I would have expected something more colourfull, light, with more nice icons, and teasing, where the reader's curiosity would be more triggered
  3. Il faudrait placer toute la partie située en bas de page : liens vers les départements, bandeau 74444, etc. en haut de page.
  4. Put the main links back on top of the page... this is very useful for navigating between departments and other links (phone, directories, etc,,,)
  5. less empty white space
  6. switch back to the old pages, please.
  7. Have the meetings in a real calendar-like format.
  8. merge with the public page
  9. That you don't need to maximise the window to see it in full.
  10. Balance and contrast between the three first column
  11. access to cern phone numbers and building locations search function
  12. useability could be much better - it's not the news what people need during work its a logical and structured presentation of useful links at cern
  13. Colors: everything look the same, not clear distinctions
  14. The new layout looks like a blog. This is good for the public pages but I prefer a more serious look for the user page. The room is not optimized either. The previous version used the whole page to display the information not this one.
  15. I miss the "Seminars today" section.
  16. The fonts on the new page are rather small and faint. They are noticably less clear than on the current page. Changing their colour for a darker one may be sufficient.
  17. Arrangement of news & departmental links
  18. the focus is on news, while I access it for regular information about CERN structure etc... the carachters are too small, and the contrast is poor, difficult to read for "old" people.
  19. Put the (for me) most important thinks like EDH, Indigo more up, so you do not have to scroll (even on 1280x1024).
  20. general CERN search
  21. more colour
  22. keep the much better old one
  23. Too much empty space, which forces one to scroll more than on the old page
  24. Many things need to be changed
  25. the page is too wide for my browser window, I would like to see it fit in my window
  26. Background and font style makes it poor and unpleasant to read.
  27. Page beaucoup trop étroite par rapport a notre taille d'écran. On n'exploite pas la taille de l'écran comme il se devrait
  28. Grey Book - see below
  29. I'd like to have a "people search" box, without having to click on "People" checkbox
  30. web page is not a printed paper so A4 must be banned.
  31. better before
  32. Map of building is horrible
  33. Add links to non-LHC experiments such as ISOLDE and nTOF
  34. to ask to keep the old layout.
  35. Readability: this seems to have been minimised with washed-out colours, low contrast type (what's wrong with clear black type ?), wispy fonts and big empty spaces.
  36. Put all the quick links to the depts and expts back at the top. I don't want to scroll down for these!!!
  37. Titles like Events, UPCOMING HEP EVENTS, ORGANIZATION, COME TO CERN etc in BOLD
  38. Links should be at first place as they are most often used ... the news might be insteresting, however they are distracting from work.
  39. I don't like to scroll down to see it all. The beauty of the old pages was that it fits 1 screen, is very dense and ideal for the frequent user who doesn't care for fancy looks but requires 100% functionality!
  40. Don't make it so large! Not everybody wants to use the full screen to find a link...
  41. Add more sections, i.e. training, education, CERN schools
  42. The sections on the bottom could be more explicit. The subject titles are a bit mixed with the contents
  43. to keep a top frame with headings: Physics, Institute, Accelerators & Services0, Communications and not to mix all the things at the bottom of the page
  44. I mostly use the quick links of the users page to go elsewhere, the news items are secondary. The new format means I need to scroll to the information I want. Why not have the links higher up on the side of a page. The IT homepage is a nice example
  45. The Vertical scrolling And Horizontal scrolling !!! (if my screen definition is bad)
  46. search selection for only cern pages
  47. Remove scripts slowing down navigation.
  48. to make it work on firefox on linux (slc4)
  49. the color
  50. Put he links on top of the page intead of the bottom. thoese are the mos used and now one neeeds to scroll down beroe being able to use them.
  51. rebuild them from scratch
  52. Allow the links to Departments, Experiments, Services to be visible on top, with a hide/show area if needed. Not nice to have to scroll all down the page. Or should be on the side.
  53. More stuff
  54. Put the information on top, not the news ... user don't like scrolling
  55. Please, please remove twitter!
  56. Put the "ORGANIZATION" and all those links higher up. I understand you want to highlight the news and announcements, but most of the time I only glance at those, and only click on the important "work-related" links, like under "SERVICES" or "PRACTICAL INFORMATION"
  57. Put back the links to all the CERN service and Departments: EDH, Library, Users office
  58. See below
  59. What you put at the bottom I would put at the top and vice-versa
  60. some images
  61. more structured
  62. The layout in terms of optimizing more to the screensize especieally make the links on the bottom available without scolling
  63. Choise of the fonds / parts of the text are not well readable in high resolutions
  64. that page should fit on ONE screen only (no scrolling down of a page)
  65. layout.
  66. colors,fonts
  67. font
  68. it page is meant for CERN user so everything which was in the top of the page should stay in the top and not in the bottom
  69. Remove the TwItter feed
  70. the list order in the Event and upcoming events: from the most recent to the oldest one
  71. how the title looks like - it seems written using MS word
  72. swap the bottom layout with the upper one
  73. the background, more pictures, more colors
  74. to have all the usefull information on the top or on the left (w/o scrolling the page down...)
  75. The general layout (feeling)
  76. The pointers to CERN dept. and activities are clearer in the "old" design
  77. Put fire dep. phone together with the menu back to top part of the page.
  78. the usability!
  79. i liked to have the field to search a building in the page before.
  80. not to change current version, only slightly improve
  81. Improve contrast or more compact layout
  82. to allow user to personalise appearance by using panels, like on BBC.co.uk
  83. Please keep it lightweight! NO Java, No Flash, no heavy images. The black frame is annoying and does not add any value.
  84. It is very difficult to recognise the fonts. The color of text should be darker.
  85. use more lines to divide the spaces
  86. new color
  87. The first two columns starting with "news", "events" might be in equal size. I would change the "users and staff" heading's font as before and would prefer the previous heading with a nice background picture.
  88. Add the Organization's name "CERN, European Organization for Nuclear Research" on top of all.
  89. Page is very heavy code, display it took veeery long on any browser (tested on Linux)
  90. ensure that everything fits onto one page - I do not like the idea to have to scroll to the links that I use most frequently and that are now at the bottom
  91. move the links at the bottom to the side for easy access - i dont want to scroll down evert time i open the page
  92. Don't have a static width page
  93. Less empty space on the top of the page
  94. Reduce the white space at top - far too much waste of screen space
  95. In the old pages, I like the different categories well seprated by different colored rectangles. In the new version, I am lost as things seem less organized
  96. It should be more compact.
  97. the news are not so visible as in the old homepage.
  98. more graphics & color. Better partitioning (boxes).
  99. doesn't make sense to modify already very good web-page
  100. doesn't make sense to modify already very good web-page
  101. Add a row of tabs horizontally across the top of the page (below the title) to allow the user to navigate back to other parts of the site.
  102. YOU DROPPED THE LINK WITH THE LHC PROJECT !!!!
  103. YOU DROPPED THE LINK WITH THE LHC PROJECT !!!! I would also put the link to the dept and cern activities on the top and not to the bottom.
  104. The most useful links are at the bottom of the page and require scrolling down, which reduced usabiliy largely!
  105. I would prefer a page with photo, with a contempary design, in the same format of the other departments webpages
  106. Put back in a handy place the links that were on the left column of the old page; at the place where you put the tweets for example.
  107. Not having to scroll down when looking for things. Too much white space.
  108. In times of x-wide screens, I do not understand, why the page is more high than wide. But that might be my personal way of using a screen.
  109. in firefox all the written text is unreadable... and it is really slow.
  110. As a homepage it should have a length such that scrolling is not necessary. A homepage should fit on one page and only contain the entry links to secondary pages with further details.
  111. put the dates in front of the announcements, like as present
  112. The most important should be at the top, and going with less priorities down.
  113. hire a (new) web designer
  114. Change the very chaotic look and feel of it!
  115. Bravo, la seule critique que j'ai a emettre est que la partie News prend trop de place au detriment des menus qui ne sont visibles qu'avec le curseur.
  116. See below
  117. Dans le sous menu 'Come To CERN': le Users' Office devrait etre en tete de liste.
  118. more pictures?...
  119. For the most often used parts of the page I have to scroll down - the links should be at the top of the page, not the bottom.
  120. Do not put the links (departments...) on the bottom of the page !
  121. give it some frames...ever heard about java?
  122. The colours.
  123. Reduce the size of the CERN logo and header text, they take unnecessary much space.
  124. Put the links that are currently at the bottom (Organization, come to CERN, sectors, ...) back at the top of the page. Those are the links that I use the most and it is inconvenient to have to scroll down the page everytime.
  125. putting information on the page, not only keywords.
  126. too much white
  127. Better use of the screen space, like in the previous page, and use of more graphic
  128. please put the links on top of the page, please put phone book and building search on again
  129. to see the day's (or better the week's) list of talks and seminars, and at most, with ONE click. everything is on INDICO, but there are too many categories to narrow down to find out what is going on easily! FNAL has a one page calendar for the whole week. its easy to see what's going on.
  130. bring order to the chaos
  131. bring some order back. The News and Announcements seem lost. Maybe better in bar on the top? Everything seems strangely proportioned.
  132. formerly, the links to subdivisions were on top/left, i.e. directly acessible, now I have to scroll down because the top/left is occupied up by large announcements. Since these also come by mail, quickly accessing the info I need for daily work is clearly my principal use case for the website. For doing so, the old version is advantageous.
  133. put the links to the top and the news below
  134. Make it MUCH, MUCH faster. Don't use frills.
  135. put some colors to distinguish various column in thecentral page
  136. more french
  137. the font
  138. I liked the CERN Structure and Services section on the left-top side of the previous site
  139. big contrast on the page takes a little bit more time to figure out where is where.
  140. More RSS feeds!
  141. I would move the red strip "call 74444" to the TOP of the page, so EVERYONE could see it EVERYTIME he visits the page.
  142. the first thing i want to see is the links i use daily+ such as edms, department links etc...
  143. background colour or minimum bold characters!!!!
  144. should fit on one page, more fancy
  145. Clearer separation.
  146. je pense que je ferai quelque chose de moins austere et de plus aboutie.
  147. dont waste soo much space for header etc
  148. Reduce the window-size, compress the informations.
  149. main menu on the left or top, *not* at the bottom of the page.
  150. to move up the bottom section with important stuff like the experiments and departments.
  151. it would not be ONE thing-why does it have to be changed- can we know?
  152. leave the links that now are on the at the top (most have been moved to the bottom and have the impression that some are not there any more)
  153. The red emergnecy should be in a top corner so we don't have to scrool down to see it!
  154. More contrast to differentiate sections: news, events, etc
  155. Move main menu from the bottom to the visible space in the top otherwise it is very unconvinient
  156. use the old one
  157. clearer, easier to read, better layout
  158. A proper layout and a clear separation between different logical elements on the page
  159. Make better use of available screen area (no black borders)
  160. link to CERN's map (which needs major improvement btw)
  161. much bigger icon of Safety Commision
  162. too much white on the new version
  163. make more visible theacces to the departments, well separate the practical informations from other stuff. I found that the new pas
  164. Change the format from "portrait-like" to "landscape-like"
  165. Navigation on top. It really sucks if you have to scroll down to get to the navigation.
  166. Better color coding.
  167. The 2 blue borders for pictures more ambiance physics more CERN like NASA's page.
  168. The links to the departments should be more prominent.
  169. It should, above everything else, be fast. This page is not fast.
  170. the links at the bottom should be better organized ... and perhaps on the left side instead on the bottom ...
  171. Provide faster access to navigation links, instead of hiding them at the bottom of the page
  172. Place the links on the bottom of the page to the top
  173. Easy access to information about the restaurants - including menus
  174. put those links on top rather than at the bottom
  175. Shortcuts to "Directories" and "CERN map" from the front page
  176. change the font to a better one.
  177. More effective use of space, a little bit more color
  178. to make it wide and low to fit the wide screen without scroll
  179. Put all link information on top, not needing to scroll down.
  180. leave the old one
  181. Rearrange the layout
  182. ... putting on top the links at the bottom
  183. Remove twitter and move the links there
  184. move the menu (organization etc) to the right or left
  185. I didn't see a link for a library search (CDS)
  186. Put the links on the top (not bottom as now) of the home page
  187. go back to the old one
  188. Use colors and frames to group information. The second part of the page should be put at the top.
  189. I'd add on top the CDSWEB search textbox
  190. To put the links at the top rather than the bottom.
  191. The location of the links to CERN services/departments
  192. The most important info should be at the top, not on the bottom.
  193. fire
  194. Arrangement of the different sections
  195. improve structure, where are all the useful links from present page, e.g. Experiments & Research
  196. Reduce empty white spaces
  197. To add a clear calendar and list of CERN events/seminars of the day
  198. clearer divisions between the different subjects
  199. revert it back to the old one
  200. Make the links appear in the first screen when opening the page, i.e. no need to scroll to find them
  201. More structured layout, everything looks the same... and the page looks quite boring!
  202. La page devrait apparaitre sans ascenseur.
  203. News and announcements should not fill all the page!
  204. visually delimited blocks of information (on white background only)
  205. too much empty space, therefore information is limited.
  206. It needs a little more clearity on the top part. The bottom part with links to various sites is quite good.
  207. Change the font: type, size and colour. It's pretty much unreadable for progressive bifocallers.
  208. Phone and building search must be type-enter. Separate edits. No radio button clicks! Placed on a confortable spot = left column.

Question: Do you have any other feedback for us?

This is a report of all of the responses (191) collected for this question.

  1. The page develops in vertical so it forces you to scroll down for the most used links Many of the links are not there anymore Readability for me is far worse A dedicated home page for mobile devices could be useful
Bien cordialement
  3. The new layout is clean and clear, but it isn't really very attractive is it? A bit like going into a flat which is all white because the occupiers have no taste or flaire. Not long after the CERN site originally appeared I complained bitterly to Robert because several American labs had such attractive sites and we had one which even had unreadable text. It is now much better, but is still a bit disapointing given that Tim invented the Web here. N.B. I don't use the CERN serach, although I would have liked to, because it simply doesn't work. I don't think I have made a single successful search using it. Unfortunately an attractive design, like a Google-powered search engine, requires money and neither have been a CERN priority. The web site (both for visitors and internal users) is the way CERN presents itself to the world and is worth paying for. My 2 cts.
  4. News and events should get less space, the other information (the gray box on the bottom) should have more space. These two should be next to each other in two columns, not under each other. Throw out the Twitter box (or at least make it smaller). Make an RSS feed for the news. The CERN map page needs a HUGE improvement: it should be moveable and zoomable (a la Google Maps) down to office level i.e. I would like to see where a certain office is located in a building. Instead of "LHC EXPERIMENTS", write "EXPERIMENTS" and list ALL CERN experiments (you know, there is also life outside of the LHC...).
  5. * I was very surprised to find the announcement of replacing "my users page" very hidden in a bulletin article. It was especially bad because - as far as I know - the old pages were called "CERN users pages", but in the article you call them something like "Intrapages". I would very much appreciate consistency and - what I see as very important - announce a possible change on the Users Page, please, so that the users can see and comment! * in my view the old pages are much better as -> the important services as access to departments websites, phone book etc are immediately visible. Even the announcements, at least part of them in case there is a lot of activity, were immediately visible. With the new pages I need to scroll each time & much more. This is bad! I do not need the news on top of the "services". -> the new pages have - in my opinion - no visual structure. Very hard to find items! -> there are too many fonts, sizes used. It really confuses my eyes. To conclude, I would very much appreciate if the "old" but great CERN Users Page would be kept!
  6. The DG unit needs to be included with the departments.
  7. That the shortest and most standard links are used. E.g. the URL: http://service-logistics.web.cern.ch/service-logistics/ should be shortened to: http://cern.ch/service-logistics/ FOR ALL LINKS! Pls also change the IT dept one to: http://cern.ch/it-dep/ to bring in inline with other deptartments (and not div!)
  8. It was very difficult to find the safety commission link, so small, red colour not nice... Events and upcoming HEP events a little bit small as well I like the idea to have organisation, paternships... at the bottom instead of top page:)
  10. I already sent a review yesterday but there are a few things I noticed now: - I miss the "Seminars today" section that is extremely helpful to see what's on today - the upcoming HEP events could be arranged in form of a calendar with events on a particular day coming up if you move the mouse on that date - Events could then be combined with HEP events - the Twitter box is not really necessary - the safety information should be at the beginning of the site to be easier found (and in a brighter red instead of pink).
  11. - There is quite a lot of wasted space on the new page. There is a lot of white space and the header is unnecessarily large. If the heading were smaller, then it wouldn't be necessary to scroll to see the bottom of the page (where all of the useful links now are). - The old page seems better organised to include the required information within a limited space. - The Twitter and Bulletin links take up a lot of space. Do CERN users really need to see these every time we go to the home page?
  12. I like the new layout as it's clear and precise. However, I'm not very happy with the arrangement because on a typical 19" TFT or a laptop screen the departmental links at the bottom disappear and can only be accessed after scrolling down. For example the emergency phone number will only appear after scrolling down which is not obvious! I'd propose to either change the arrangement and have them at the left/right border as before or limit the space alotted to the news section.
  13. Twitter is not necessary on the users homepage (at least for me). I would prefer to have the information which are now at the bottom of the homepage further up, that they can be accessed without scrolling.
  14. The old search text fields were more effective, since one could use the <tab> key to navigate from search field to search field, i.e. not having to use mouse to select content, people or building. It's more important for buildings than people, since the latter will appear in a web content search. Perhaps the use of building: or some other thing to access the building info would be nice. Mouses are quite slow compared to keyboard, also when browsing, when scrolling (and no accurate positioning is sufficient. Best,
  15. Your new pages are MUCH MUCH better. By the way, your star in questions 1, 2 and 4 doesn't lead anywhere.
  16. The "Seminars today" section is completely missing. Many times I found there interesting seminars happening that I would have missed otherwise. On the contrary, the "Upcoming HEP events" section, is too prominent for my taste. Information about events several weeks in the future should only be of secondary interest for a user home page that is visited several times per day. The search for people now requires to manually select "People" in the search box. Since I am doing this many times per day this will become annoying very quickly. Get rid of the "Twitter box" on the right hand side. After all this page is for users and not for the public. It doesn't add any useful information and only clutters the page.
  17. - The specific info for internal use should be more accessible (with a laptop you have to scroll the full page to find them) - The organization of the information is sparse and the look - even from the graphical point of view - is not nice - It follows too much the organization of the public page: for an internal use you want something more practical - for sure the first thing you want to see IS NOT twitter...for that the user can go on the public page - I think it is not at all an improvement with respect to the current page: pages of others labs (as fnal) looks much more professional.
  18. The HTML code could use some improvement (inline event handlers are passé, 18 errors in the validator); also the search box doesn't work for me; nice to see that a high-profile javascript library is used to improve the site; the layout is much-much cleaner, but not perfect (e.g. big gap on the left side below the news); altogether it is a nice new frontend, but needs a little more polish both in coding and design.
  19. Consistency problems: please use for example crazy mix of time formats on http://user.web.cern.ch/user/beta/access/ instead the ususal 13:00 format. I am not able to test the new page on my Nokia N97 becaus the I am not able to scoll to right to get rid of the warning. Maybe you have to think about the reflow of the design and no stick to the fixed with in 2009.
  20. The lay-out is much better but the page altogether is sad and less appealing than the former one. In my opinion due to: - empty background that should be "fancied up". - font style unpleasant to read. - frames and separators almost invisible.
  21. Grey Book is an important tool for us - which countries in which collaboration, which institutes, who in which institute. Will this still be available?
  22. People search points to XWHO, that has the big red warning "The XWHO directory software is no longer being maintained". Event dates were clearer on the old page. On this poll you say "no questions are mandatory" but in fact the first two are. Thanks for your work.
  23. 1/ All screens are wider than high. The web pages must follow this evolution. Moreover people tend to have big screens 19 to 22 inches or very small (iPhones, blackBerry,...) so one should thing of 2 web pages format. 2/ In Q4. I do not understand the proposal for the pages in "English only", this sound unacceptable as CERN has 2 official languages. Please note that "French only" is also unacceptable and this is probably the reason why it is not proposed.
  24. must be more userfriendly, more colors
  25. The new design seems to be really slow, at least on SCL4. I really liked that the old pages were quick to load. I also hope there will be better search options in the new website. The old one is really bad ... usually I end up using Google in stead.
  26. Personally I am a bit worried how the procedure for the new pages is working. -> in the bulletin article, just at the very end it is mentioned that "intranet pages" will change. The common name of the pages is "CERN Users Pages". I am sure that everybody is aware of the common name, but by introducing this inconsistency, it looks odd, like the new pages should be "sneaked in". -> just recently a link on the CERN Users pages was added, but by adding this link so late, and I assume after some feedback of the users only, it again gives a strange impression how the "new" pages are imposed onto the community... -> even worse, feedback can only be given from "computers inside CERN". If this is true, the more than 10000 users in the institutes around the world are excluded. This is in my view not correct!!!! -> the new pages are NOT fulfilling their role, at least in my view, to be "Users pages". The current pages for me are "work pages" and starting point. From there I can easily access lot of info I need over the day. Announcements I only read once per day, for this I can scroll down the page. But to access info, I prefer NOT to scroll, so the new pages are unpractical! The order of the new pages "announcements on top" "practical links on the bottom" is thus bad and I would prefer the order like on the current pages. -> I personally do not like the new layout. There is no structure, no "guide the eye". And by using many different fonts and font sizes, the feeling is horrible.
  27. I use mobile devices (Windows mobile, never the iPhone) very frequently. So a mobile version of the CERN main page would be very useful. The old one was much better (but not ideal) from this point of view. The CERN phone directory seems to work but suggests it may be out of date: this is an essential function which should be properly supported (the alternatives suggested are not convenient). A Google search limited to cern.ch generally works much better than "CERN Search". Horizontal scrolling on the new page does not work properly unless the browser window is so wide the the black bands on left and right are both visible.
  28. Drop the Twitter thing ... As it is organisation, CERN doesn't need to twitter. USE the white space at the top and side of the page. (Its OK if this page is dense --- its for people that know what they're doing.) Put the quick links at the top of side of the page ... no scrolling for quick links. And #1: work really, really hard on a new search. Use Google if you have to. The current search is rubbish ... one searches for something and one gets hundreds of old documents in CDS ... somehow the current engine doesn't understand relevancy. Try searching for "restaurant menu" for example and you'll see what I mean...
  29. It is a user-staff pages so, for me, the part with ORGANIZATION, COME TO CERN etc on the top of the page (style is good for me) . Then links (TWITTER, Bullettin) on the bottom (rows and NO columns) as well as Events and UPCOMING HEP EVENTS (rows and NO columns). News and Announcements on the top (rows and NO columns), maybe same style but also something "more visible" like the "sliding" subtitle in a television news to give sensation of "real time" news.
  30. (1) The old page used to be a comprehensive compilation of useful links that would allow fast movement to target pages in the blink of an eye. Now, the first thing which pops up: news - in full screen! Fair enough, but if you could provide a page that has nothing but the good old links, then I'd rather put this one as my start page and read news/blogs/whatsoever when I decide to. (2) The contrast of the new page is fairly bad.
  31. See Q7, the layout of the dense old pages was much better and better readable as well. For example the big font title STAFF etc is useless, takes unnecessary space etc. I can imagine that you want to change the look, fine, but keep it all on 1 screen page that fits the common screens and keep it dense and in a matrix!
  32. 1. Make it simple: * few big topics * clear hierarchy * not too crowded 2. Make it fast to access things * simple layout (max 2 columns, better a single one) * clear distinction between "menu" and "items" * not too crowded The present layout is quite far from being optimal. PS. I don't care at all about it being "nice"... We have the welcome page for the visitors for this
  33. Please add CERN Accelerator School (with a link) so that it is visible as this is our main source of advertising. We ask the public to contact via this webpage.
  34. I think a good search engine would be very useful at CERN. Most of the time, I find myself using Google to search things inside CERN.
  35. Direct and important links have disappeared from this homepage , e.g. LHC Project, CLIC study, sLHC ...
  36. The feedback form is quite restrictive, It's mainly the Q8 field I need. I mostly use the quick links of the users page to go elsewhere, the news items are secondary. The new format means I need to scroll to the information I want. Why not have the links higher up on the side of a page. The IT homepage is a nice example
  37. The new page looks more trendy, but I feel there is too much information on the information page and the categorizing is not very efficient. It does not make me want to read what is in the site. I did not feel this problem when the public page changed.
  38. The HMTL pur is more light that this "commercial" pages
  39. The new version certainly looks more up to date. However, certain things are differently organised, so it will take time to get used to it. The main weekness is still the search tool, I never find what I need with it. Is there something that can be done?
  40. This page is to havy regarding local recources. The scrolling lag to much on firefox, windows or linux. Please remove the horizontal scrolling bar ! I want to use this page with old display. This page is not the public page, stay pro, simple, efficient. Could you put the end of the page with department link on the top ? Thank you for asking feedback.
  41. Please keep the old page with all useful links!
  42. The page is simply not usable on firefox on SLC4. How is that possible knowing that SLC4 and firefox are amongst the official computer configuration ???
  43. the new page is A4 portrait oriented, while the majorty of the screens is A4 landscpe oriented. See comment under Q7.
  44. Keep the old pages.
  45. Many of the people that I know use the page to find easily the seminars of the day. I think that the new format has too small fonts and ti does not highlight the seminars. I think there should be a section below the usual announcements with the seminars plus something lower with future events.
  46. Try to keep simple to be possible use by every one.
  47. Not giving a very "modern and dynamic" feeling. Lacks video and pictures as we could expect on a modern site and CERN's got loads of material. Don't like the variety of fonts. Lacks coherence.
  48. Not made for users. - Doesn't use the full screen - Information/links on the bottom -> should be on the top - looks more like a blog ... not a serious page - Don't use fonts with serifs ... use Verdana, Arial etc .. is much better to read fast
  49. I would preffer more compact and clear presentation, without any fancy add on like twitter or any other social websites.
  50. Dear Colleagues, 1) Please remove my answers to Q.5 and Q.6. I did not want to answer these quenstions, but the www-interface forced me to put an answer in order to submit the form. 2) I was perfectly happy with the existing WWW site. The new one has no direct access to many things (at least I did not find it): EDH (I always access through CERN www site) Departments: IT and HR I always access through the CERN www-site CERN Library: I always access from CERN www-site there are more: Experiements, Users office, CERN clubs, ... I personally would like to have all this links back in the new page The announcements end events, which dominate the new www-site I see (and read) them once opening the CERN home page (which is the default in my browser). The events I only look up if I get attrackted by the title and the time slot compatible with my agenda. In any case I estimate that on this part of the present page I spent about 5% or less of the total time I spent on the CERN home page. If you would add a second page, where I can acces these services, then I would not navigate to the main page anymore and hence would not look onto the announcements regularly. If there will be no such second page, I will just store the links in the browser with the same result. For this reason I think that the combination of "service links" - which I need every day and the announcement part was very smart.
  51. I think the page looks good, it is clear and well-structured. However, it needs a bit of colour, and there is some general and practical info missing, which could be added at the left-hand bottom of the page (like on the old version), for example links to : - Practical Info (Directories, Buildings/Roads, Maps, Transport - Access formalities - Name, Address and More... - Services (AIS, EDH, Indico, eGroups) - Conference Rooms - Other Services (bank, post office) - Search in CERN (CERN Intranet, CDS, EDMS) - Site Alphabetical Index
  52. The new homepage looks like a text editor page, not pretty at all. It should be also more "condesed", so it fits to a typical screen widhout scrolling.
  53. It is not so clear when tou have to search people (the word phone book is missing somewhere
  54. the new one is ..flat..
  55. - On a scree with a resolution of 1920x1200 you have scroll to access all links on the botton which is very impractical. This section sould be paced somwhere else or the Events section sould not exceed a certain space so tat the stuff at the bottom is always visible without scoling Also the emergency is not visible without scrolling. It should be paced somewhere where it is always pressent, e.g. as top line. - The black backgroundcolor on the right and left side gives a feeling entering a memorial page. A grey, darker tahn in the midle section would improve it or even use a colored background for the right and left side. The other colors uses at the site are a good choice - The stuff written in italic is hardy readable (Event section) - The titles in the bottom section should be a bit more highlighted e.g. bold written
  56. corrently the links to importand information is at the TOP and in the LEFT bar. In your new page you have put these at the BOTTOM. Is the vocation of the internal main page to inform about NEWS and EVENTS or do most CERN people use it as an entry to find a link to other information pages. This shoud lead to a design decision.
  57. Since the beginning of WEB editing its a very good habit to show ONE screen page only and the further pages in a menue on the right. The letters should be chosen to be readable on any screen (NOT too thin; they can be small however!)
  58. It looks like a page of an institution whose main aim is to do seminars and not the web page of a physics laboratory. - How many clicks I should make to access SPS page 1? - How many clicks to access the web page of a SPS experiment? - Why this page should link the public web page of the LHC experiment? I'm on a page for CERN users and staff, you should assume I want to access user pages of the LHC experiments. - Why links are hidden at the bottom of the page? The use for a portal is to be the starting point to access information. CERN had an "historical" web page where most of information was available with one or two clicks. In my opinion it was more suited to the needs of CERN users and staff than the following ones. I like to see the news on what's going on at CERN for some minutes a day but for the rest of the working day I usually work... and part of the work is spent in finding information that is (purposedly?) hidden on the CERN we sites.
  59. Layout: The older, with access to different parts at the top of the page or on the left felt easier. Colours: White is a bad choice, very tiring for the eye.
  60. it's a long and thin webpage with a uniform coulour - it's as if you're making it easy to print on a4 or something - this means the delimitation between sections if not clear enough. have a look at bbc.com, perhaps give an option for "personalise" in the same way?
  61. - many usefull links have been moved to the bottom of the page. This requires a lot of scrolling. - Some frames and different background colors could help to group the information (news - upcoming events) - The telephone directory points to xwho. the first thing the user sees it the massage stating that xwho is no longer maintained
  62. I see no improvement over the old pages. the change of order of things is a step back. this is a portal, not a news feed. So news should go last, as indeed they are in the old pages
  63. On Firefox, and on particular on Linux, the page is too slow when i scroll down. I guess this is due to some scripts behind. Of course, everything is fine with the Internet Explorer provided by CERN. Since there are so many Linux users and/or Firefox users at CERN, why the page is optimized for internet explorer and is too slow to scroll down on Firefox and on Linux?
  64. See separate E-mail
  65. The ATLAS link is related to the public web site and not to user web site
  66. too much things about security, "political' infos used to provide a save guard for responsible. gives full of smoke and mask goods infos.
  67. you reduce the amount of information so users would have to browse more. This has to be a page for the users not for the general public!
  68. The old page was not beautiful but we find information easily. Now the general layout is catastrophic (cold, unfriendly, etc) and it is impossible to find things (no borders, etc). The most important information are at the end !! I do not understand why there is a such big space for Twitter (in my opinion totally unuseful). Before seeing the new page I didn't like the old one but after having a look to the new one I prefer the old one... sorry
  69. Safety at CERN should have a clear link on page number one.
  70. Hi, the new page is too narrow, looks like it contains much less information and I dislike the idea of menu on the bottom of the page. I would evaluate the color scheme of the new page good as that of the old one. I don't think the top part with only 2 words spread over 1/6 of my widescreen is effectively ocupied space. Please reconsider space dimensioning of the new page and also CSS scheme for content titles and descriptions, it's hard to read content in the middle of the page if you do not see a clear text structure/flow at the first sight, it looks messy. Thank you!
  71. The big advantage of the old page is that one can easily go to a link without scrolling window! But it looks now much more better!
  72. I have the feeling the new page will require a lot more scrolling since a lot of hyperlinks will be on bottom, when they are directly accessible when on top of page...Well, saying that, i don't use so often these links, but if i don't see them anymore, i will not know they are present. I mean seeing the hyperlinks keeps you aware of them being present...
  73. The current version is much more informative and representative. I think that one should stay within the common sense and not to make the improvement for the sake of improvement.
  74. * bad contrast : light blue on white -> hard to read * very small fonts, although page is not compact -> hard to read, but still requires big screens. * current demo page scrolls very slow when using firefox (did not try anything else). * does not even fit on a screen with 1024 lines -> to access the links everybody in particular notebook users have to scroll down to the bottom of the page.
  75. I find the departments, indico, search etc. links on the side bar in the current page more convenient than having them at the bottom as it is new one. I also found the twitter box distracting - I maybe biased because I do not use twitter myself. The news and announcement may be important, but the arrangement does not seem to be a good use of space, and seeing that the news in general remain for a few days whereas users and staff are likely to be opening their browser with the CERN page as default homepage several times a day, I suspect the habit of simply ignoring it will soon be cultivated. Recommend a drop down box of some kind to show the news when user hover their pointer over the header instead. Regarding the news items themselves, moving towards more pictures and videos (again like BBC - pictures of the day / online iplayer) format could be good too - if possible.
  76. As a user of Mozilla on SLC5 Linux, I find the new page very slow to load compared to the old page. It also slows down my computer. Please take into account that the CERN User page is loaded frequently and used for professional purposes. Therefore it is essential to keep this page lightweight and to avoid media gimmicks, fancy applets and other design features. A well laid out page with HTML and CSS only is sufficient. Thanks for your collaboration!
  77. The look and feel is very nice, but not for the an everyday use. It would be perfectly fine for the public web page, but not for someone looking for information in a fast way. The existing one looks to me much more efficient and usable.
  78. Change in a general means is good but, the new website is very unfamiliar. Could you please do a voting before really put it into use? Many thanks in advance.
  79. -Add the Organization's name "CERN, European Organization for Nuclear Research" on top of all -Insert as page background our CERN logo. -Highlight the main titles in bold (dark blue ?) color -Generally, add more "volume" to the page.
  80. Please, make also the light-weighted version, for text-only or simple browsers. This page must load fast, and have a quick response, which is not true for this version.
  81. I like the look of the new page, but the HEP events that dominate it are not my priority.
  82. You should convince the patrimony group to provide a better site plan - the present one starts to grow old. In the era of Google Earth, etc. much more can be expected. Second remark - The CERN search is crap - Google gives better results - an urgent need for improvement.
  83. It's too messy
  84. I mostly like the full-screen width of the old version - I don't like web pages that are static width, especially when that width is less than the width of my screen resolution (1280x800). Most people nowadays are moving to wider screens anyway. Plus you can get more information on if you utilise the full width. I think the titles of each section ("News and Announcements", "Events", "Upcoming HEP Events") could be made clearer - perhaps in a grey bar or something? Also try to standardise them, they are each in a different size font, some all caps, some not, which makes it hard to distinguish that they are different sections. You could possibly make the top header a bit smaller, to maximise the info that is shown on the screen when you first open the site. I've found that people don't actually like having to scroll around to find stuff, most of what is read is what is visible as the page opens. Perhaps put a line/border in between the two columns on the page? I really like the Twitter box! Maybe make the border a bit darker, or even slightly gray the box the announcements are in to make it stand out more. Finally, could you make new announcements appear in a different colour to read ones? I just makes it easier (and quicker) to see what I haven't read yet.
  85. The page could be structured in three columns. The first one could stay quite the same, giving the links to the most important searches. The second one should give access to the latest news and announcements, which by now are too far down the page. The third column could include what is now on top of the page, i.e. the points on Physics, Institute, Media, etc. One specific link per matter should be enough, so twitter and the bulletin could be linked under the "news" topic. The colouring of the background should not be too bright. I can imagine it is quite demanding of the eyes if you work on a usual screen with low mean brightness and come to a page with a white background... The organisation of the different points concerning "search" and "practical info" could be restructured and perhaps even combined into one point. Both are linking to one search or another anyway... Perhaps it is even possible to make one single search line for everything, allowing more choices than by now with access even to CDS, EDMS, the page search... By the way: Do you really expect people to scroll down the complete page for finding the right number for emergencies, at least if they are close to panic? The red background and the use of a single line for this are a good idea, as it will be more visible than before - but only if it is on screen! Perhaps a line always staying at the bottom of the visible screen area is possible? Hope my thoughts help! Cheers...
  86. Only two years ago, all pages from PH, HR and sharepoint site were completely remade to follow a "corporate image" and a common template. This work is not even finished, that we have seen appearing "another template" with a different look and feel for BE, TS, EN, and GS departments. Would it be possible to have a template that is changed less frequently that the time it takes to deploy it ?? Otherwise we will continue to offer this very amateur look and feel on our web shopwindow.
  87. CLUBS have dissappeared. At least old site had 'social activities'. On new site it is not obvious how to find CERN clubs (of which we have 5500 members for 60+ clubs) All the stuff I use daily is now below the scroll due to the huge use of white space at the top :-(
  88. It's important that all off the most used stuff is available immediately - and that it's no necessary to scroll down to find what you need - all the good links is at the top of the old page, which is quite useful - on the new one you have to scroll down every time you want something. If you're going to read the news you don't mind scrolling - so some of that can scroll of the first part of the page.
  89. because it is a homepage, this is a page that can link you almost everywhere the links should be on the sides or in the top and NOT in the bottom. when I look to the old page I can see clearly the date of the last news, but in the new one everything seems to be the same... and the date is too small and grey!!!
  90. Link to safety commission : I would have written the link to SAFETY COMMISSION in capital caps; and it would be nice to put the small pic "http://user.web.cern.ch/user/Welcome/SCSafetyAtCERN2.png" beside the Safety Commission link.
  91. More (or better) hierarchy (e.g. departments can be hidden)
  92. Please keep the old version
  93. Please keep the old version
  94. This is a great improvement but I think the users need a better way to navigate back to other parts of the site. Throughout the website, on every page, I think there should be a row of tabs across the top of the page, one for each of the main topics: "Information for Users", "About CERN", "Publications" , "Resources", and "Come to CERN". When the user mouses over each of these tabs there should be a drop down menu that shows him or her the sub-topics, for example, under the "About CERN" tab there should be a drop down menu with the sub-topics "CERN in a Nutshell", "Science at CERN", "Research at CERN", "LHC", "People at CERN", and "CERN and the Environment".
  95. The new fonts are very nice :-)
  96. Today most screens of users have a width of 1400-1600 pixel horizontal resolution. fixed widht of pages dont make good use of that. Intelligent resisable container a would be much better imho.
  97. no
  98. The links in the old page were the main reason to use it; reading the announcements was a consequence. Overall, it worked well. Putting the link at the bottom and having to scroll the page to get to them may make the page less attractive for me. The tweets are easily available elsewhere, I don't see the point in having them there.
  99. where are the national phone directories, which I always found very useful?
  100. Take a look at the pages of University of Bath. Excellent layout. http://www.bath.ac.uk/
  101. Using WinVista & Winy: I regularly get an error message, especially after the laptop was offline. Message "Cannot reload the page". Requires restart of IE8. Others: I hope it is possible to give feed-back several times.
  102. The new page has potential, but the layout is a bit uninspiring as it is now. For example the different font sizes/styles all over the place look weird Also, I miss the building search
  103. Titles and subtitles are not highlighted enough. Maybe by use of different background colors or other fonts (bold etc.) and separation lines you could change this. Department links should appear at the top or close to the top. Reduce the text to a minimum and insert pictures or logos (with links associated to them). The Fermilab website could be taken as an example. (www.fnal.gov)
  104. On the old homepage there are direct search to Directories - Buildings and Roads - CERN Search - Document Server (CDS) etc. I use a lot, these are not on the new homepage and will be missed
  105. We need to scroll down each time we want to go on a reference link, can you improved that.
  106. That first page looks very unprofessional. One first spots that there are 3 headings with different font size - "News and announcements", "Events" and "Upcoming HEP events"
  107. Please do not use this 'new' version. Graphically and in terms of being able to get a quick overview it is a massive step backwards!
  108. Il est bien regrettable que le Service Medical ne soit visible qu'avec mot de passe...
  109. Why Users and staff as a heading and not the reverse? The homepage and layout are very bland - the icon flagging at the right is a good idea however. The advantage nof the existing homepage is that some attempt is made to separate the various categories of information by different coloured fields, discrete segments, etc. and to suggest a hierarchy of information. This has gone in the new homepage and, for instance, key pages on org. structure are relegated to the bottom. You might consider some visual means of flagging separate areas of information to enhance their visibility and possibly their relative importance. At present, the range of information is so disparate that it is unclear that this is a portal to more.
  110. L'acces a une page d'accueil pour le service medical devrait etre publique.
  111. It is very slow (scrolling etc) on Firefox 3.0.15 on SL4
  112. there should be the DG department available
  113. How do I access the phone directory ? Nothing about education and academic training !!! How can we access the scientific committees web sites ? What about conferences? How do I find the USER schedule of the accelerators? Where is the link to public page ? The old page had a direct link to the LHC project. Now one has to go to the ATS page (furthermore it not clear on the ATS page that you can click on the items) LHC Access: not clear what it means, in particular due to its strange position among media.
  114. I don't find the font particularly inspiring.
  115. The new page does not give any useful information, is is only a linklist. The current page is very useful to get a daily overview of actual information and events without clicking through several other web pages.
  116. Can you change the basis colors white into grey or something else and black? my eyes will be happy...
  117. I like the new design, it's clear and without unnecessary content. Nevertheless, I'm already used to the other design and it's hard to change to the new one. For example, when I try to find a phone number. In the new version I have to make an extra click (in the radio button 'People'), which was not necessary in the previous one.
  118. the actual pages are very efficiant even if not very nice -> I would suggest to keep the same structure, just change the design
  119. Unusably slow from Firefox and SLC, on an otherwise fast PC.
  120. Why "buildings and road" have disappeared ?
  121. While probably overloaded for newcomers, the current home page is a portal where many functions can be accessed directly or only 1-click away. The new page may be lighter, but definitely is less usefull for heavy users (which must be a very large fraction if its users ?) The graphic layout/text is presumably only temporary (it looks horrible at the moment)..
  122. trop étroit
  123. I was looking for the old entry "Directories" giving access to the national phone directories. I could not find the entry.
  124. Departments, LHC Experiments, Online Services and Services should be moved on the top of the page - so that one can easily get through them. Now one have to scroll down first, and click on the of the links. Secondly, i think these are the services which mostly CERN users use and given the LHC have started (it could be nice to have some of beam status dashboard image refreshed every hour or so or some other LHC Live chart).
  125. if the upcoming events or any kind of list needed to present on a web page it is much better if it is in table format or there is slightly color (shade) difference in adjacent lines. And human eye could easily picks-up the interested information on the page. Sometimes shiny pages look ok but simplicity colors that doesn't tire your eyes are welcome, this one of the reason why I loved the current web page.
  126. It would be great if the news, announcements, and events were provided via RSS feed and/or through the CERN twitter posts.
  127. I couldn't find anywhere "what's on today" link. On the new page, I have to click on "indico", then on "view" and then on "today's event". That's worse by 300%... The new page looks better but it seems to me less practical.
  128. I like it it's clean and elegantly simple
  129. Personally i feel the page view with blank borders is a waste of space, maybe put the links back here? Just because you have to scroll through the news and events first does not mean people will read it, I can quite imagine getting in the habit of scrolling past it reading less or even not at all. At the moment this info catches my eye anyway. Could the old web page be revamped with a more space effective version. I would also miss the Alphabetical Index link which doesn't seem to appear, is it only me who uses it, i guess you have done some statistics on this.
  130. I would prefer to have the links and the search fields on top left position where they were before.
  131. Look at the web sites of PSI, STFC, DESY, Fermilab: there is color, pictures, and the readibility is better probably due to the strcuturing of the page, perhaps the font. To my taste, they all share the same drawback of not fitting on one page but require scrolling. Fitting to one page enforces a hierarchization of the information that I find really useful for the user. For example, you could have only "organization", Partnerships, departments,...When the mouse is on one of them, then you expand in an auxiliary window.
  132. Think not of style but on usability. The most important links (to me) are hidden at the bottom :-( Also, the arrangement of these groups of links is not intuitive.
  133. to most useful part whcih is the navigation is hidden at the bottom of the page. not very usable
  134. Keep in mind: For us, users it's a web-page to work with everyday and not a site to just surf around (therfore we have the public page - and that's a good idea). => Not the look of the page is important but its compactness.
  135. I'd appreciate also a direct link to the webmail, among those already in the page (EDH AIS and so on)
  136. Loose the twitter and "news for L'homme de la rue" (e.g. Girls can do science too" is NOT an article worthy of page 1 of CERN. Such psudo-news belongs to the external home page.) Upcoming HEP events to the leftmost column and RSS'ed please.
  137. in the proposed version the eye cannot distinguish any helpful nor logical separation, it skids on the lines whereas in the current one colours, lines, grids and subject positions are quite well studied I stick to the old version - the new one at present just does not compare- it is as if the old one had simply never existed - was it a useless effort?
  138. All computer displays are Landscape, yet you keep formatting the new page as portrait It may be that the present choice of announcements (doesn't seem to get updated) be unfortunate, yet for working I do not need to see first thing that "there will be (was in fact!!) a workshop for my daughter future in science" (I am interested in it, but put it at the bottom of the page please). I'd rtsher see the announcements, the seminars, the conference activity going on at first sight and then be able to acces from the page the working links to division, services etc.
  139. Practical links should catch our eyes, now it does not, we have to read through in order to find something! Should be more structured with a better layout.
  140. The new page is public relation oriented and not user oriented. It does not contain the information needed and expected. I want a direct pointer to the various services, information, and departments. The foggy announcements "girls can .." should not occupy the space. Try it again (or better keep the old page for the users)
  141. Too much wasted white space - It does not need to look pretty, it must be functional. Difficult to see the structure. hard to read small font on white background.
  142. It's hardly readable. The text blocks should be separated by borders/backgrounds at least.
  143. Three different fonts fot headings? Wow! Links to everything at the very bottom? Not so easy to find! There is only one plus: white background and black color for text.
  144. The Safety Commision should be bigger and higher, not in the bottom corner. It is to important issue for this place. Where is CERN environmental page? I could not find it, neither in previous page version (not in the part for users).
  145. I find the new version less clear... we do not get the essntial of the information as in the previous page. The twitter link is not needed on the side of the page (as well as the bulletin) at the bottom should be better. the page is far too white and do not show categories anymore. Having to scroll down to get tothe usefull links is a pain.
  146. See above, by opening the page only the upper third is visible for the rest scroll-down is needed. As all informative links are at the bottom this is tedious. Try to fit all onto one screen without the need to scroll then it is OK. In the whol a lot of useful links (e.g. Accelerators and services) are lost It gives the impression to be more a "public" than a staff and user page
  147. No.
  148. I don't found the phone book on first page
  149. Graphic and Visuals are so poor. CERN has invented the web but not the design. It is a pity for a such organization. Please put it more photos and videos.
  150. Most users use the internal page to access department pages. However, they are tricky to find now as they're located at the bottom. On a 15.4" laptop screen only a very small part of those links is visible. On smaller screens like netbook they disappear totally and if one doesn't pay attention to the scrollbar one is likely to give up searching for them. Crucial info like the fire department's number is located at the bottom which is not visible at all on a laptop or even a desktop PC!
  151. Avoid silly frills like overlays and side bars that don't move. Keep it simple and make it fast. This proposal is unusable, at least with Firefox.
  152. I mostly consult announcements by RSS / CMF (for the most urgent ones) and general CERN news in the CERN Bulletin (which I receive by email). It is more important to provide a useful, portal like, web interface than a news page for internal users.
  153. I use the page mainly to get access to online services, department websides and practical information. Therefore these points should be easy to find on the page. For reading news and announcements I can use the Public Welcome Page. In my opinion the proposed users' homepage is too similar to the Public Welcome Page. This way the need for a dedicated users' homepage is questionable.
  154. First impression very good. What I don't like is that every sub page (department, user's office, medical service, etc) has its own with different style. Most of these pages are extremely out of date and very hard to navigate.
  155. -There are very few Services visible on the front page. Perhaps this is reflecting the facts that they don't exist or that they are not valued. How about IT services, Mail service, Post Office, Banks, Health Insurance, Restaurants etc.? I think that new Users would appreciate finding such things on the front page. -The Search facility of CERN is not capable of finding the most relevant pages. It is amazing that Google search is more efficient here. Could CERN use directly Google search (and also Google scholar search) for web pages and documents at cern.ch?
  156. The new page looks much more flat and less focused on important items. Better change the font to a better one and make items more evident!
  157. It would be nice if the new page would fit on an 17" screen - that is what it should be designed for. The header part is a waste of space, the emergency call on the bottom appears only when scrolling down - not very effective.
  158. Today, everyone has screens of 20inch++ ... why still sticking to fixed width of the site ? I guess the most important use of the user page is to find internal information from services departments ... a good structure with clear headings over not more than 5 - 10 links is helpful to find the required information.
  159. I can't find the Safety Commission web page?
  160. E.g. the term "room booking" is not clear as is, it could be misunderstood to allow hostel booking, while it refers to meeting rooms.
  161. Too much space given to news whereas the department links are hidden at the bottom. Important information like the emergency number is totally hidden. On Notebook screens it won´t appear at all unless the user scrolls down, which is not an obvious thing to do. Lots of unused space at the sides.
  162. The old page is by far better...
  163. 1. The most important is the search. Improve the search engine, the present state is horible! I find it easier to search at CERN using google instead. a) Rate pages and order them according to rating b) Use only one search for people, web and buildings (not with the radiobuttons) but the search engine should understand if you are refering to person, building number or anything else 2. Make the web page dynamic like iGoogle so everyone can customize what he thinks is important for him
  164. I did not find a link to the non-LHC CERN experiments??
  165. Some information that I can directly access from the old page has disappeared: CERN address, link to CERN projects, and most important to CDS
  166. If adding a heading with "Sectors", all sectors should be available and not only one as it is right now. I have many times found it difficult to find information about groups in the DG department/unit. I would add a link to the DG unit under the Department heading even if it is not a "real" department.
  167. CERN pages is really a mine of informations, but most of the time it is really difficult to find the correct info. Most of the time searching through google (restricting to cern sites) gives better results than using the general CERN search. So on my opinion some efforts should be devoted to improve the intranet search.
  168. The page is too long and requires scrolling to access parts of it. It would be preferrable that it fits on ONE page which can fit on a screen with the standard resolution!
  169. The page is flat, no highligts/ separation. Too few information on the page, useful links must be looked for while they are easily accessible in the old one
  170. I really don't understand the reason of putting CERN useful links on bottom. News and announcements are not as important as services, departments and practical informations.
  171. In my case I would always be scrolling to the bottom of the page for the links. If these links where at the top it would help.
  172. In my opinion, as the home page is almost never contained in the whole screen, it will be better to have links to CERN Departments, services, physics (the actual top and left part) in the first part of the page
  173. I think it is important that the information is presented attractively and easily accessible. The new layout has too much white space, no attractive graphics and most useful links are on the bottom. I prefer much more a layout with attractive info and a primary navigation bar on the top, such as www.jlab.org and then useful links on the left and news and other info in the center, such as www.slac.stanford.edu, then a footer with reference links, again www.jlab.org is nicely done.
  174. All fixed screens are 'landscape' but the new page is 'portrait', askin to scroll to see the bottom of the page. Do 'fixed screen users' – still the majority, I think – have to accept the 'diktat' of the iPhone and ... owners ?
  175. Lots of space is unused at the side. However, important links to the departments are at the bottom and hard to find, especially as this is an internal page! Twitter section takes lots of space and is pretty useless.
  176. please add a link to the LHC under sectors (as on the old pages), and possibly a link to other project pages
  177. Change "events" and "Upcoming HEP events" informations order (decreasing dates and not increasing dates)
  178. The new layout is largely unstructured. Very hard to read, font size too small. Useful links only at end of page, has to scroll down each time. Applies in particular for link to safety
  179. Please make it more readable (e.g. with a darker blue color for the text)
  180. Presonaly I prefer to have a quick overview of the actual day. If you visit the ALICE website you can find a calendar and a list of meetings for the given day. In the current test version of the CERN site it is suggested to go to the Indico... well that is not a fast solution!
  181. where is the phone directory?
  182. What is the advantage with respect to the old page excepted that we need some time to get used to it? Graphically it looks much less attractive than th old one , gray in gray style
  183. Put a link to the Users Office, information about registering users, and useful information like information of health services in Geneva and Pays de Gex easily findable. The current tag "Coming to CERN" refers mainly to coming to CERN to become employed by CERN.
  184. I don't see a reason why you should make the User page look similar to the home page: it's not intended to be viewed by the general public (then if people peek there, that should not be a concern). Plus different pages having different layouts makes easier to visually remember the context where the links could be found. If all the pages look the same, remembering where to find a link gets difficult.
  185. Please put the link to Safety Commission and emergency numbers at the top of the page where it is always displayed, irrespective of screen size. Why does "Users and Staff" have to take so much space at the top of the page ? Don't we know who we are ? Can you relegate the "Twitter"bits to the bottom of the page. I don't do Twitter to get CERN news. I have my own sources. :-) The Search box could be more central on the page and may be to the left where we used to have it. How about more icons and less text on that page ?
  186. Ce serait bien de garder la philosophie de la page actuelle, c'est a dire que tout apparait en une seule fois. Et rajouter de la couleur.
  187. I prefer the old website
  188. Hi, Here is some feedback from a point of view of a staff member. --- On style --- Remove the black borders. Feedback sign: too visible for what it's used, people rarely provide feedback (but I guess it's okay for this exercise where you want it emphasised). Not easy to distinguish the blocks of information. Keep in mind that screens tend to be wider (avoid vertically designed pages) and that handheld devices can't display hundred of lines easily (and can quickly turn from portrait to landscape) => don't make assumption on the final layout, prefer small blocks relatively located to each other (heard about "liquid layouts"?) Avoid huge differences in font sizes on the same page. Avoid to fade everything to grey, use a better contrast. --- On content --- Target audience not clear: staff, CERN users or public ? Menu-like content on the bottom of the page too big => provide something simple on main page (e.g. only abbreviations for departments, or one word entry). Anything more complex on a "site map" page. Emergency phone number at the far bottom of the page, I can't believe it! Clearly, the current (soon old?) site was better *user oriented*, quick, visually clear, mostly with only the essential (e.g. Practical Info block). --- Hints --- As a (web) user, here are a few sites that I think have a good design. Maybe a source of inspiration... http://www.wfp.org/ (maybe a bit too complex) http://www.apple.com/ (simplicity)
  189. I think it is a good idea to have the page bilingual. I don't speak French yet, but am about to start learning it. It would be a nice place to practice reading French.
  190. This web page should be concerned with functionality, allowing you to go to as many pages inside CERN with a single click. The old page does this better, although it could also be improved. The page should scale within the available size of the browser, but I guess those horrible black bands are temporary. You should follow the structure of the old page: news in the middle with links at the top and sides. Keep it simple, no javascript please!
  191. Old page sure needs rework, so thanks for trying. But: Please, the first thing you must consider, is that you are dealing with scientists = function over all. Large fonts = no. Too much free space = no. Large banner = NO! (takes space, has no function). The rightmost column (twitter et. al) = NO (no one cares). Bottom navigation great, but too low! Contact perfect. The news/events/etc. spread to width limit the height! (no banner... again). Search: divide edits again. You do not want to piss of people by forcing them to click radios. Place left as on the old page. And the last idea: you scared hell out of me by presenting this as beta. This is like pre-alpha, guys!
