B513 Planning Meeting, 18th March
2003
Present:
Tony
Cass, Anne
Funken, Jukka Lindroos, Tim Whibley
1.
Previous Minutes
- 4.2c) Only one of the UTP boxes, the one near the door from the
operators’ corridor, can be moved.
- 3.5) Marcel has started on a plan to resupply equipment and is
in contact with Jacques Toullieux.
2.
Substation Status
- The civil engineering work is
essentially finished; in principle, only the barriers and the work noted
at the provisional reception meeting remain to be done. Jukka noted,
though, that the doors for the HV room do not have the grills foreseen in
the plan. Natacha Lopez will contact Belloni to see if this can be fixed
even though it was not noted at the provisional acceptance. Jukka will
contact SC to ensure these grills are acceptable in a fireproof door. If
not, he suggested that a fire damper could be added.
- The 18kV equipment installation has been
completed and the tests completed successfully.
- The mechanical part of the HVAC specification
will be ready by March 19th. The price enquiry will be sent out
towards the end of April once the control and electrical supply elements
are available. This delay is of no consequence for the overall planning.
3.
Machine Room Upgrade Status
- CS group have confirmed that not all
network equipment needs to be connected to the critical UPS. Anne will
order dual inputs for the two PDUs in this area to ensure an alternate
supply during maintenance (and any future upgrade work). Anne commented
that the “physics only” equipment must all be powered from a dedicated normabarre.
- This led to a discussion of the
arrangements for the other two critical areas where the PDUs have only one
input on the assumption that all equipment would be dual supply capable.
Anne will investigate the possibility of adding a second input to the
PDUs, but we should also look at options for supporting switches with a
single power input. There is no immediate problem for maintenance as there
is an alternative possibility to resupply the PDU attached to the critical
UPS system. Flexibility for upgrades is reduced, however.
- The cable passages between the machine
room and the vault will be blocked and then painted with a resin based
paint to improve protection against water infiltration. Wouter van Baaren
will contact Tim Whibley to
arrange this work on the right hand side before the first equipment is
installed there.
- The false ceiling along the Salève wall
on the right hand side will be dismantled on March 19th. The
company have been told of the need to stop dust spreading in the machine
room.
- Installation of the new ducts will start
from Monday with the inspection meeting at 9am. Anne asked that particular
care be taken installing the duct near the critical PDUs and that this be
placed as far away from th4e PDU as possible.
- The test with seven HVAC stations
running will now take place at 16:30 on Monday 22nd. Noise
measurements will be taken in the machine room and in the conference rooms
on the first floor.
4.
B513 HVAC Planning
- The plan of the HVAC plant room is now
complete and work has started on the plan of the chilled water piping.
Once this is complete, expected to be in about a week, work will start on
planning options for the installation of the new chiller.
- Tony emphasised the need for an update
estimate of the HVAC upgrade costs before the Computing Resource Review
Board meeting in April. This should have better estimates for the
different elements of the work (machine room duct installation, new
chiller, replacement for the corridor cooling, noise reduction measures
for the conference rooms, and others as necessary). It is accepted that
these estimates will be refined between now and the next C-RRB in October.
The caveat that the state of the chilled water pipes is not yet known is
also accepted. Jukka agreed to provide an improved estimate by March 26th.
5.
AOB
- Tony has a presentation from Intel
covering data centre issues, notably cooling. He will check if this can be
distributed.
- Tony noted that equipment with a
consumption of about 380kW would be closely packed in the right hand side
of the machine room over the next few months, with some heavy consumption
equipment installed from April 5th. We should be prepared to
make ad hoc arrangements to ensure that there is adequate cooling. Jukka
considered that the system should adapt, opening dampers automatically as
necessary. If not, dampers could be opened manually on the left hand side
to arrange an improved air flow.
- Next Meeting: 2pm, Tuesday 20th
April.
