10 October 2007 - GB Meeting
-
Agenda
The main topics of the GDB in October were: Status of
the Service Challenges, and Activities of the LHC
Experiments so far, Security and Authorization Issues,
Status of the CERN/Tier-0 Resources and of the
Monitoring Tools that are being developed.
The Service Challenges summary was followed by a summary
f the CCRC meeting. The Security and Authorization
presentations covered the Job Priorities
implementations, the Authorization in gLite and a
discussion on the usage of glexec at the Tier-1
sites.
9 October 2007 - Pre-GDB
Meeting -
Agenda
CCRC 2008 Planning - The morning of the Pre-GDB
meeting was dedicated to discussing the scope and the
goals of the Combined Computing Resources Challenges. The
LHC Experiments presented their vision and plans for the
challenge. From the following week the CCRC planning
activity will officially start.
GSSD Meeting - The GSSD Meeting reviewed the
status of the SRM 2.2 implementations, the status of the
LCG tools using them (GFAL, lcg-utils, etc) and
discussed the organization and the preparation of the
SRM 2.2 Deployment Workshop in Edinburgh.
31 August 2007 - GDB Meeting -
Agenda,
Minutes
The GDB meeting in September, hosted by TRIUMF in
Vancouver, focused on the Readiness of the Middleware Services
and the status of the Migration to SL4. Reports were presented
about SRM, FTS, LFC, CE, WMS, 3D Database Services
and VOMS.
In addition there were presentations about the
ATLAS and CMS Tier-2 Centres in the US,
Security Policies, OPN Network, Accounting and Pilot
Jobs.
8 October 2007 -
Agenda,
Minutes
New Certifications on the Pre-Production Service - Several
components were moved to the certification phase before being
released for deployment at the sites: the APEL packages was updated,
including many enhancements and fixes, the YAIM 4 installation
manager, the LCG-version for the WN and UI components, the new FTM
monitoring service for FTS and the gLite 3.1 BDII that is now ported
to the SL4 platform.
Fix for
glite-lb-client Missing - Missing RPM
(glite-lb-client) files from the gLite-LB package caused garbage
collection on some stand-alone LB servers not to work
correctly. This will eventually cause the LB to fail. An easy manual
fix is now available.
Removal of
gLite-job-*
Commands - The announcement, already given in the past, of the
removal of Network Server from gLite 3.1 WMS was repeated. The
consequence for the users is that the
gLite-job-*
commands are not valid on the gLite 3.1 WMS. Instead only the
gLite-wms-job-* commands will now be available.
Request of ATLAS LFC Server Update - Request was made for the
ATLAS LFC (LCG File Catalog) servers to be upgraded from
version 1.6.3 to 1.6.5-3 as quickly as possible.
1 October 2007 - No Operations Meeting
24 September 2007 -
Agenda,
Minutes
LCG-RB to Maintenance Mode - Following the release of the 3.1
WMS, developers in JRA1 and integrators in SA3 are no longer
releasing updates to the LCG-RB middleware component. There are now
many LCG-RB installations deployed with in the EGEE infrastructure,
e.g. CERN has 16 of them. A plan for service termination of these
LCG-RB installations will now be defined and implemented.
ATLAS Reported Inconstancies in the Information Published -
ATLAS noted that there is a large mismatch in the
published information concerning jobs running and jobs waiting
between the traditional GlueCE objects and new GlueVOView objects.
This issue is now being investigated.

9 October 2007 -
Agenda, Minutes
CCRC 2008 Organization - J.Shiers
presented the initial organization of the Combined Computing Readiness
Challenge 2008 that will take place in February and May 2008. The
goal is to run a common challenge, simultaneously with all LHC
Experiments, in order to demonstrate the readiness of the WLCG
Computing infrastructure at a scale comparable to the data-taking
rates foreseen for in 2008.
Grid Security and Site
Operations Policy Approved - The Management Board approved two
security documents proposed by D.Kelsey regarding site operations
and general grid security.
Report on Benchmarking at CNAF -
M.Michelotto reported the results of the CPU benchmarking tests
conducted at CNAF during the Summer. The performance of HEP
applications were compared with the SPECint 2000 and 2006 benchmarks
in order to understand how to estimate and re-scale the SPECint
values. This is needed for CPU procurement in order to compare the
actual CPU power installed at the Sites vs. the CPU requirements, in
SPECint 2000, in the WLCG Memorandum of Understanding.
CPU Usage Efficiency
- T.Cass presented statistics data about the low efficiency of the
jobs running a the WLCG sites. The problems discussed is that the
applications seem to use only 50-60% of the CPU power available at
the Sites. Improving such efficiency would allow better usage of the
resources available thus considerable savings.
LHCC Comprehensive Review Preparation - The agenda and the
presentations for the LHCC Comprehensive Review (19-20 November
2007) are being agreed and a first proposal is now available.

2 October 2007 -
Agenda,
Minutes
Approval of the New GridView Algorithm - The Management Board
approved the new algorithm used to calculate the reliability of the
services at the WLCG centres. Link
Status of LCG Resources Planning -
S.Foffano presented the status of the resources - CPU, disk and tape
storage - required by the LHC Experiments in the coming years. She
also compared those requirements with the Sites procurement pledges
for the next few years, until 2012. This activity continues because
several Tier-1 and Tier-2 sites still have not provided information
on their 2010-2012 pledges.
SRM Update - J.Shiers presented a
summary of the status and progress of the development of the SRM 2.2
implementations and of the SRM installations at the Tier-0 and
Tier-1 sites. No major issues since last report.
Sites Reliability and Job Efficiency Reports for September 2007 -
Now the reports also include
availability tests developed by the LHC Experiments - VO-specific
Site tests - in order to test the configurations needed by
each Experiment at the Tier-0 and Tier-1 Sites.

Next LCG Applications Area Configurations - The Architect
Forum agreed that the next series of configurations will be: LCG_53c
to be built as soon GFAL 1.10.2 is made available,; LCG_53d, a
complete release for Mac OSX (Intel); LCG_54, a preview configuration including ROOT 5.17/02.
ROOT using SubVersion - Announcement that ROOT have migrated
its code repository from CVS
to Subversion (SVN).
Schema Evolution in ROOT - The proposal to support complex schema evolution in ROOT was
presented. It was agreed that there will be individual discussions with each of the LHC
Experiments and with the POOL project. The goal is to
define the complete specifications of the new API by December 2007 and
an implementation by June 2008.
Applications Area at the LHCC Review - The Architects Forum
agreed the list of presentations for the
next LHCC Comprehensive Review (19-20 November).
