UMTF Computing Tutorials

Miguel Marquina, Jan Hendrik Peters and Alan Silverman CN/DCI

The User Migration Task Force of the CN division organises a regular lecture series which is targeted at users who need to migrate from CERNVM or any other platform to Unix, and who need to acquire enough knowledge for their everyday work on one of the Work Group or PLUS Servers or any other workstation running the recommended HEP Unix environment. Later we will also cover subjects related to PC applications which are available in the NICE context.

It is not our intention to teach Unix or PC applications in anything like their totality. For that there is a full programme offered by CERN Technical Training services. Rather we intend to offer short seminars or courses dedicated to specific topics.

The instructors will be in general from the corresponding support team itself although we may on occasion benefit from visiting experts from other labs. The courses will be offered at no cost and, unless space is limited, with no prior reservation of places.

The program has started in 1995 with the courses shown below. It will continue next year covering topics as scripting languages like Perl and Tk/Tcl , X sessions, mailing lists, etc. The timetable for these will be published in due course. Most of the lectures will be repeated to give more people a chance of attending. Some of the lectures will be presented in French.

Tutorials

Tutorials on the following topics were given in 1995:
``Introduction to Emacs'' by J.H.Peters
``Advanced Editing with Emacs'' by J.H.Peters
``Basic Unix Commands / Unix File System'' by J.H.Peters
``Basic Unix Commands / Unix File System'' by J.H.Peters
``Handling your Mail on Unix with PINE'' by A.Miotto
``How to Access the Public Unix Services'' by T.Cass
``How to Set Up Your Unix Shell Environment'' by A.Taddei
``Basic Unix Commands / Jobs & Processes'' by J.H.Peters

Most of the tutorials are held in the CN Auditorium. Abstracts of the tutorial, and time and date of the lectures are available on the Web

http://wwwinfo.cern.ch/umtf/training

and are published in the CERN Bulletin and the cern.computing newsgroup. The slide material shown during these lectures is also made available on the Web for viewing and printing.

Please send your feedback about these courses (quality and scope, topics, etc) to User.Support@cern.ch, as well as any special requests for other subjects.
