Like every other computer, when you get an account on the MailServer, a password is set for you. However, for users of pine, there is normally no need to know your password, provided you access your mail from an ``officially recognized'' machine. ``Officially recognized'' machines include cernsp, hpplus and the workgroup servers. In addition, you can request your group administrator to register other hosts, such as your private workstation, from which you will be able to access your MailServer mailbox without the need of a password. (All such hosts are entered in your .rhosts file on the MailServer.)
If you use Netscape to read your mail, the .rhosts file mechanism doesn't work and you are required to supply a password the first time you access your mailbox. This password is stored, encrypted, in your Netscape configuration file and you will not need to give it again as long as this configuration file is accessable when you use Netscape.
If you got your MailServer account as part of a mass registration, your password will be set to a random string and you will have to contact the UCO to get it reset. If you got your MailServer account at the same time as your AFS account, your password will be the same as your initial AFS password. It is however a separate pasword, in a separate password file and has to be changed independantly of your AFS password. To change it type:
rlogin mail passwd follow the prompts exit
