Letter from the Editor

Dear CNL readers,

I will take the opportunity of this "Letter from/to the Editor" section to encourage all users of the CERN Central Computing facilities to read it (or to browse it on the Web) as it is one of the important communication channel. I also encourage all the service maintainers in IT to continue using the CNL to transmit any important messages to the User Community.

I especially draw your attention to some articles that may be of special interest for a wide community:

• the official announcement of a "Java Development Infrastructure" deployment, and the availability of the "Java Development Kit" (JDK) on all central platforms,
• the splitting of the central PC hardware support into two different sections dedicated to precise tasks: PC Desktop (which will supply the "standard" PC configuration both for NICE - 95 or NT - and Linux), and PC Technology (for more specialised configurations),
• an interesting chapter for "Internet Services" with useful tips contributed by the Mail team, and much Web-related information and news.
